In November 2019 Microsoft Ignite Assembly in Orlando, Microsoft released a new Migration Azure migration assessment capabilities, further simplifying the migration plan. Next, we will discuss how to use the Azure Migrate Project migration planning to do a Physical Server?

Prior to this, Azure Migration only supports VMWare and VM Hyper-V migration to Azure, but in 19 years Ignite Assembly in Orlando, Microsoft launched a migration Physical Server as well as some assistance migration function: Azure suitability analysis, the cost of migration planning analysis, based on the adjustment scale and application performance dependencies.

Azure suitability analysis: assessment and checks to determine whether each server as it can be migrated to Azure, if found to be not compatible, you can change its properties and recalculate assessments.

Migration cost planning: The assessment also provides detailed cost estimates, performance data for your local server to recommend suitable Azure VM and disk SKU, which helps optimize the cost and size when migrating servers, because your internal data center may have an excess of supply, you can use a subscription offer reserved instance pricing and cost estimates.

Dependency analysis: the estimated costs of completion and preparation migration migration planning can do that by using dependency analysis features, you can understand which workloads implementation interdependent, need to migrate together, which helps ensure you do not leave the key elements inside, you can rely on the visual map items in a table format or extract data dependencies, you may be divided into a plurality of groups server, and to refine these groups by checking for dependencies migration.

Use Azure Migration Migrating Physical Servers

4 steps to complete the assessment of Physical Server:

  • Create an Azure Migrate Project, and evaluate server solution added to the project.
  • Azure Migrate tool to set up and found that the server name or IP address of the server and traverse, each traverse device supports 250 servers.
  • Upon successful discover, you can create assess and check the assessment report.
  • Use the application dependency analysis features to create and refine the server group, in a phased migration.

When you are ready to migrate servers to Azure, you can use the server to perform the migration to migrate later, Microsoft will also add support for traversal applications on physical servers and agentless dependency analysis.
