How to read literature (How to Read a Paper)

How to read literature (How to Read a Paper)

Professor Srinivasan Keshav in this article from the paper, my mentor and guide their own summary.

Read the document "three times on"

The first pass: Extensive Reading

Use about 5-10 minutes

step:

  • Carefully read the title (title), a summary (abstract) and Introduction (Introduction)
  • Ignore the content in each sub-heading read article
  • If there is a mathematical content, to skim, to determine its theoretical basis
  • Conclusion reading
  • Browse references, check out the references have read

Need to think about:

  • Category : What type of paper?
  • Background : What other related papers? What is the theoretical basis to analyze problems based on?
  • Correctness : Suppose paper looks correct?
  • Contribution : What is the main contribution of the paper is that?
  • Objective : What is the purpose of the paper is to study?
  • Definition : This paper written okay?

Second time: Intensive

Use about 1 hour or so

Do not tangle terms have not seen, and do not indulge in details proved derived.

Step :

  • A closer look at the paper chart , attention to details
  • Involved in the paper tag references of interest, to facilitate subsequent further reading
  • Marker expression was good sentence (the feeling is very important for non-native English researcher)

Need to think about:

  • If they have the data to do it again, what is a difficult place
  • If it is to prove this hypothesis, what areas for improvement

The third time: Reconstruction of paper, attention to detail

Follow the author's ideas, to reproduce the content of the paper in mind.

The reproducible results were compared with the actual paper, we can easily see the innovations of the paper, find the text implicit assumption capture hide potential problems and lack of citations in experimental and technical analysis.

Identify the authors state each hypothesis, personally challenge it, make their own thinking.

Summarize paper

We used two ways summarized in the paper after reading the papers.

Details Edition : This article is for what purpose, to do something

Abridged version : The most important innovation of this paper (for peers)

Paper mark

I used to use Adobe Acrobat PDF format on paper annotated markers.

The following are my comments habits.

  • The expression was good sentence (orange underlined)
  • Worth learning point (orange text)
  • Places worth Tucao (purple underlined)
  • Tucao comments (purple text)
  • Conclusions and content worth noting paper (blue underlined)
  • A brief description of the contents of the blue underlined, excluding Comments (blue text)
  • The term & noteworthy points or data sources like (blue highlight)
  • Had read the literature (green √)
  • Ready to further reading literature (red ○)
