Allow remote access to your Mac computer

If you allow remote login, you can log in to your Mac using Secure Shell (SSH) from another computer.

You can not log on to your Mac using Telnet.

Set up remote login on Mac

  1. On a Mac, choose Apple menu   > "System Preferences," click "Share" and then select "Remote Login."

     

  2. Select the "Remote Login" check box.

    When you select "Remote Login", will also enable secure FTP (SFTP) services.

  3. Specify which users can log on:

    • All users: Any user on the network and anyone can log on your computer.

    • Only these users: Click the Add button  , then select who can remotely log on. "Users and Groups" contains all users on your Mac. "Network users" and "Network group" includes everyone on your network.

Login Mac from another computer

  1. On the other computer, open the "Terminal"  App (if a Mac) or SSH client.

  2. Type the ssh command, then press Return.

    The general format of the command ssh:

    ssh username@IPAddress

    For example, if your user name is steve, your computer's IP address 10.1.2.3, enter the following command:

If you do not know Mac user name and IP address, open the "Sharing" preferences "Remote Login" panel. Your user name and IP address appears in the "telnet: Open" under the indicator.
