ProtonMail iOS client declared full open source

E-mail encryption service provider ProtonMail (also known as "proton-mail") announced the fully open source its iOS client, and have adopted GPLv3 open-source license will be source code is hosted on GitHub.

ProtonMail team said the open-source choice because safety is the top priority of what they, in particular, many dissidents and activists who use their services, and in order to ensure safety, the application uses the encryption end to end, and to ensure that these applications must be strictly checked by an independent third party. Earlier this year, they hired a security firm  SEC Consult  for iOS application ProtonMail conduct an independent examination , after inspection by the open source version.

Because we believe the open source community to give Proton bring transparency and greater accountability, increase user confidence in the security of the platform, and enhanced security team to develop more and more focused commitment to privacy applications. ProtonMail team believes that by virtue of transparency and power of the community, to build a more private and more secure for all applications.

ProtonMail team also said that open-source, users can see the functionality of the application, the source code can be used even in the case of distrust binary distribution of building your own applications.

For the team it is very important, because sometimes the lack of documentation of the source code is difficult to understand, document and form a security model will help the public to their code of conduct rigorous evaluation and review.
