In software, we like to say the name is difficult - because it is. Another equally difficult thing is to try to capture the essence of the project in the logo. Logo have a lot of significance in a small space. Icon, such as Jenkins logo, build a strong emotional connection with many developers. So, with this in mind, we are always closely listened to feedback about the new logo, as well as how people look at this project.
Why should we change logo
When listening to a variety of feedback from various sources, we heard a lot of positive things, but also highlighted some of the problems and confusion.
- Not everyone liked the logo, we heard a lot of feedback on that people do not like the terms, including "smoking a pipe" at the top of this feedback.
- Jenkins project and confusion - we also see this logo is more consistent with other mascots Jenkins, which has led to confusion about Jenkins X is what type of projects - some people think that this is another plugin ecosystem.
- We also heard that using Kubernetes logo confusing, or may not be entirely within the scope of the guidelines in Kubernetes logo.
- From a practical point of view, we also heard the logo too detailed, it is not good as a icon, especially a favicon. It is seen as the mascot instead logo.
With the continued delivery of the establishment of the Foundation, Jenkins X Foundation is one of the founding project, different from Jenkins, we felt it was time to deal with this the feedback. So we really back to the drawing board, to think what kind of logo can better represent Jenkins X as a project. We consider the content we want people associated with the project are: open source, continuous delivery, speed, automation, stability, teamwork and so on. We also wanted a logo, you can increase the representation, so we want to avoid a human logo on, it may inadvertently coded gender, age and other factors. In addition, "X" has become a unique part of the project logo, so we want to really emphasize its new logo.
The new logo design and community feedback
In the end, we focus on trying to visualize the speed and automation, which led to the idea of the robot. However, we still hope that in some way represents the original logo in tribute Jenkins project. We specifically decided not to insist related Kubernetes and related projects on traditional nautical theme. We went through several iterations, refining and reducing details. Design work in close cooperation with the Linux Foundation Creative Director Craig Ross and his team, they also produced a sustained delivery of the Foundation , CNCF, Network Service Mesh and Tekton brand.
After determining their satisfaction at the core Jenkins X design team, we bring it to the community to get feedback and to address some of the details. We have a lot of feedback, including all the things that make people think of (a reversal of the koala, Bill Nye, Reddit logo, Flash Gordon, Tekton logo , etc.). The original design has a consistent theme is that it does not reflect the friendliness of the community. Jenkins 和 Jenkins X
Jenkins X initially Jenkins sub-projects, is now an independent project Continuous Delivery Foundation (CDF) is. The new logo tie time to remind people where it comes from.
