Fedora CoreOS team announced the first preview version of Fedora CoreOS, this is a new Fedora version designed for safe operation of the vessel and large-scale workloads constructed, it is   Fedora Atomic Host  and CoreOS Container Linux  successor. Fedora CoreOS the Container Linux provides tools that automatically update models and ideas and packaging technology, OCI support and Atomic Host SELinux security combined.

Why is Fedora CoreOS?

The container allows repeated workload deployed into production, and automatically scaled to meet demand. The container provides isolation means that the host operating system can be very small, it only requires the Linux kernel, systemd, container runtime and some additional services, such as SSH server.

While containers can be run on the server operating system, full-size, but specifically for container to build an operating system can provide functionality general-purpose operating system can not provide. Since the software required is minimal and uniform, the entire operating system can be deployed as a unit. Moreover, since the vessel deployed on multiple nodes for redundancy, so the operating system can automatically update itself, and then without interrupting workloads restart.

Fedora CoreOS is safe and reliable host for your computer clusters built. It is designed for containerized run workloads and design, without regular maintenance, use the latest operating system improvements, bug fixes and security updates automatically update itself.

According to official reports, the main features are:

  • Provide the same infrastructure

  • Automatic Updates

  • The default perform some telemetry

Fedora CoreOS still under active development, the preview version is not used for production, during the preview, Fedora CoreOS may change in incompatible ways.

In addition, CoreOS Container Linux will be maintained to about six months after Fedora CoreOS declared stable. During the preview, the team will release tools and documentation to help Container Linux users to migrate to FedoraCoreOS.
