ESXi network configuration in detail

If you want to manage ESXi host network, then we must understand some basic concepts:

ESXi network Overview:

Physical networks: physical network is to enable normal communication between the server and the physical network established. Virtual network built on top of the physical network, not a physical network, virtual network there is no need to exist.

Virtual networks: a network running on the host virtual machine ESXi communications with each other for mutual communication and the logical connection is formed.

ESXi network components:

Physical NIC: Acronym vmnic, ESXi kernel is called a first vmnic0, the second block is called vmnic1, and so on.

Virtual NIC: referred to the VNIC, each VM can have multiple virtual network card for connection to a virtual switch, to ensure proper communication between each other.

Virtual switch: Acronym VSwitch, ESXi provided by the kernel, for ensuring mutual communication between the virtual machines and the management interface, and the network provided by a connection port / port group similar physical switch.

Virtual switches are divided into three types:

Standard switch is managed by a separate host each ESXi simple switch, the switch is simple standard operation, but modifications are each configured to repeat the operation on all ESXi host, the management cost increases, and migration of virtual machines between hosts when will reset the network connection status, increased the difficulty of monitoring and troubleshooting. Standard switches provide three types of ports / port group:

Virtual machine port group: a virtual machine ESXi the connection, able to communicate with each other periods, may be connected to an external network (access vmnics if not, then only a single communication between stations ESXi).

VMKernel: for vSphere ESXi host connection provides advanced capabilities over a network, such as vMotion, storage networks.

NIC Team: a plurality vmnic simultaneously access the same port / port group, increase throughput, and may provide link redundancy in case of failure.

Distributed Switch: Distributed Switch is centralized management of multiple esxi advanced switches. Only you need to configure it again in vcenter which
it can be advanced features for multiple esxi unified management costs, traffic monitoring and control, private vlan and so on. FIG:

distributed switch port to provide a distributed / port group, members of the distributed port group connected to a host port vmkernel esxi nic or may be specified for each port configuration, but may be a member of the port itself change some configuration.
Switch provided by third parties: here do not introduced, it can be seen literally.

Using standard networking switches
to create a new port group on existing switches
use webvclient login vcenter, in the navigation bar, click vcenter- host,
