JetBrains report: Scala/Go/Kotlin have the highest salaries, Objective-C is declining

The results of JetBrains  ’ seventh annual developer ecosystem survey, The State of Developer Ecosystem 2023, have been released, based on survey responses from 26,348 developers around the world.

This year’s report expands on the field of artificial intelligence (AI) from previous years. Examined developer perceptions and concerns about AI, common features of AI assistants, and current adoption of AI-enhanced tools.

Some of the key takeaways from the survey are:

  • The top three languages have remained unchanged over the past three years (JavaScript, Python, HTML/CSS). Although JavaScript has been at the top of the list, its share has been declining. JetBrains believes that JavaScript programmers are more likely than other programmers to report learning other languages, so expect its share to continue to decline slightly. SQL and Java ranked 4th and 5th respectively.
  • Rust is the only commonly used language to set a new popularity record this year. The report believes that Rust will surpass Go first, because one in every six Go users is considering adopting Rust. Like Scala, Rust is the language that programmers are least willing to migrate to.
  • Objective-C seems to have reached the end of its life , having lost two-thirds of its users. "From its inception in 1984 until Apple released its successor Swift in 2014, the Objective-C language has maintained a good momentum of development. But with the emergence of other cross-platform languages (such as Kotlin, Dart, etc.), the choice of iOS developers Increasingly, there is almost no reason to continue using Objective-C."

  • In 2023, Scala, Go, and Kotlin developers are among the three highest-paid categories.

  • Since 2021, survey data has consistently shown no improvement in the ratio of female developers. Only 5% of developers are women, indicating a huge gender gap in the industry. It is worth noting that in 2023, the proportion of female programmers under the age of 30 in South Korea will reach 14% , showing a good development trend. This is most likely the result of strategic long-term government policies to promote gender equality and encourage women to work in the IT industry since the mid-1990s.
  • The complex pattern of generative AI services: 77% of developers use ChatGPT, 46% of developers use GitHub Copilot; 59% of developers still have security concerns about using AI generation services, and 19% are worried that AGI will Hostile to humans.
  • The most common ways developers use AI assistants are to use natural language to ask general questions about software development, followed by generating code, and generating code comments or code documentation.

  • 73% of developers experience burnout during their career.
  • 63% of developers use Docker.

  • 41% of respondents have contributed to open source projects; 20% contribute to open source projects more or less regularly.
