Go is the most popular recruiting, developers hate PHP/Swift/Scala/R/Objective-C

Hired, a talent recruitment site, recently released a " 2022 State of Software Engineer Report " stating that as the competition for talent heats up, the demand for software engineers continues to accelerate; the demand for software engineers in 2021 has more than doubled that of 2020. .

The report is based on an analysis of data from more than 366,000 interactions between companies and developers in their job market, as well as 2,000 survey responses collected between January 2020 and December 2021. Designed to provide engineers with insight and resources to advance their careers; and for employers to enhance their recruitment and retention strategies.

The report lists some of the software development skills that most spark employer interview interest. Among them, the programming language Go topped the list of in-demand skills for two consecutive years, and engineers proficient in Go received 1.8 times the interview request than the market average. "It's designed with simplicity in mind, yet is incredibly powerful, making it popular with engineers," said Dave Walters, Hired's chief technology officer .

It was followed by  Ruby on Rails proficient developers who received 1.78 times the market average for interview requests. Next are  Scala, Ruby and React Native. Hired pointed out that Ruby on Rails remains one of the most convenient and powerful frameworks; and React is in high demand, and startups and more established companies are turning to React as they look to rebuild their platforms.

Cloud skills like proficiency in Kubernetes, AWS, and Google Cloud Platform rank low on the list, with engineers with these skills receiving around 1.3 times more interview requests than the average.

Among the 2,000 developers surveyed, the top five favorite programming languages were: Python, JavaScript, Java, TypeScript, and C#. Developers see these languages as having useful, well-maintained libraries; and being easy to use and powerful, making them easier to program.

PHP, Swift, Scala, R, and Objective-C were ranked lower, as respondents felt they were more complex and "overwhelming," with some developers saying they had "a terrible experience with them."

Compared to other software engineering jobs, the most in-demand job on the platform is full-stack engineer, with a 2.1% year-over-year increase in interview requests; followed by back-end engineer and front-end engineer, respectively.

The increase in overall demand has led to an increase in salary levels as well. Hired research noted that the average salary for security engineers increased by 7.59% between 2020 and 2021; this means that these developers now earn an average annual salary of $165,505. A severe talent shortage in cybersecurity is driving demand, as well as wages.

The growth of voice, chatbots, and AI-powered transcription in the enterprise is also a hot spot in the tech space, pushing the average natural language processing (NLP) salary to $160,227, an increase of 2.48% compared to 2020.

Overall, the salary level of software engineers in the United States remains the highest in the world. In 2021, the average salary in San Francisco will exceed $170,000. It was followed by Seattle ($162,000), Los Angeles ($151,000), New York ($152,000), San Diego ($150,000) and Boston ($149,000).

Due to the pandemic, remote work is also on the rise; developers who are open to remote work receive an average of 20% more interview requests than those who are not.
