"Open Source Windows" ReactOS Improved GUI Setup/Installation

Recently, ReactOS Deutschlande.V. announced that it has hired a long-term contributor to the project to work on the development of ReactOS GUI setup mode (ReactOS GUI setup mode) in the next five months. This feature will replace the previous text-based setup scheme. to lower the threshold for use.

ReactOS is currently paying Hermès Bélusca-Maïto to develop the ReactOS GUI setup mode over the next five months to complete the first phase of the ReactOS installation process.

According to reports, installing ReactOS will go through three stages . The first two stages deal with the installation of the system, while the third stage is the user's first usable boot interface.

  • Phase 1 – Text mode setup, booting from the ReactOS CD-ROM.
  • Phase 2 – Booting into the GUI installer. Input of user information and registration of files.
  • Phase 3 – Boot to desktop, user configuration.

Currently the only option for the first step of installing ReactOS is to install via text mode , the rest of the installation will be handled after the second stage installation. Since the inception of the project, this has been the standard method for installing ReactOS on a virtual machine or bare metal, so it requires some barriers and has discouraged many users.

The development roadmap for ReactOS GUI setup mode is as follows:

  • Complete Winesync for the setupapi.dll part of the CAB file extraction;
  • Move the FreeLdr bootloader installation selection step after the ROS disk/partition selection step and before the actual installation;
  • Integrated registry setting callback (currently does not exist in GUI settings);
  • Add GPT support for GUI settings;
  • Miscellaneous (further cleanup, some refactoring, etc.).

Details

The main goal of the ReactOS project is to provide an operating system that is binary compatible with the Windows environment. It allows your Windows applications and drivers to run as if they were running on Windows.

In addition, due to the application of the appearance characteristics of the Windows operating system, users who are already familiar with the Windows user interface will be at ease when using ReactOS. The ultimate goal of ReactOS is to enable you to use ReactOS to replace Windows without feeling a change in the end-user experience.
