Why do I say that 90% of technical people will fail when they start a side job? !

The word is like the face, I am Brother Jun!

In the past few days, many programmer readers have asked me how to start a side job? And there is one guy who has been working for half a year, but it is difficult to increase his followers. This guy has been working for about 2 years, and the company he works for is considered a medium-sized second-tier company.

I summarized what I talked with them and share it with you!

1. There is a high probability of insufficient professional accumulation.

Most programmers or product managers don't do their jobs well. In other words, your own hard power is not enough to support your side business, so it is recommended to work on your main business first and don’t mess around!

Generally speaking, it is recommended to work for at least two years or more.

2. Give up after not persisting for a few days

why?

Take writing a public account as an example. The reason is that there is no feedback. So what is the feedback? It’s either an increase in readers or an increase in reading, and the most important thing is that it can be monetized.

For example, there were more than 30 friends who came to me to learn how to write public accounts before, and only two of them could insist on writing two articles. However, there is no news from these two now.

Basically, we can conclude that if you persist, you can eliminate more than 90% of people.

The deeper reason why you can't persist is that you don't have enough internal drive, or you are not that poor, or you are using the excuse that your current job is fairly stable, but what is coming will always come. If you want a smooth sailing in life, it is recommended that you have two incomes. In this way, you will not be anxious about various "graduation" problems at work. After all, most adults' anxiety begins with lack of money~

3. If you want to start a side job, my suggestions are as follows

At present, I think the best way to start a side business is to create a personal IP through a video account/Douyin/Bilibili/Xiaohongshu (public accounts are no longer recommended for everyone to join, because this product has basically reached a period of decline, and it is difficult for new people to increase their followers. Go to the sky.), because it is actually helpful for one's own growth. Secondly, it has compound interest and is consistent with long-termism (don't consider opening Didi or delivering food. These have no advantages for us programmers, and they are just working hard and selling time. Making money is meaningless).

The self-media platforms mentioned above can be selected and tried according to their own advantages. After finding a good positioning and choosing a good platform, such as making a video account, you must first learn to select topics (original content) + persistence + operations + monetization methods, and continue to iterate and reflect.

In other words, high-end people must not only be able to create products, but also be able to operate products. Let’s talk about the fact that it is at least an order of magnitude more difficult to achieve 50,000 self-media fans than 50,000 monthly salary, but the income may be much higher than 50,000~

Finally, I want to say that for video accounts/Bilibili/Xiaohongshu/Douyin 1000 fans is the life and death line, and then find a suitable monetization method as soon as possible, usually advertising/own products/little yellow cars and commissions for bringing goods. Of course, there are also advanced gameplays that I won’t talk about one by one.

If you can achieve 1,000 fans and continue to monetize it, there is no problem in starting a small business on your own in the future, because you have already developed basic business thinking, and you are not afraid of layoffs in the company. You can live without relying on any company platform!

Let me tell you, my video account has already exceeded 20,000 fans after about a year of operation, and Xiaohongshu has already had 2,000 fans after 2 months of operation. There is still a lot of experience and methods to share.

Finally, let me give you a preview. Next Wednesday at 21:00, we will do a talk on "How do technical people make career plans and side jobs?" "To share, I will first talk about career planning, and then share my insights and thoughts on my side job. You are welcome to come to the live broadcast room with your questions. See you there~
