Overcoming obstacles and forging ahead, I am a novice dad, but I still smile like a teenager - 2022 annual summary of Brother Xiaokang

I. Introduction

Looking back on 2022, it has not been smooth sailing. Regardless of work or life, you will always encounter various problems and trials.
However, fortunately, we are all strong. We can open roads when encountering mountains and build bridges when encountering waters. The process is tortuous, but the ending is beautiful.

I wish all fellow bloggers to overcome obstacles and forge ahead in the new year.

2. Work summary

It has been 8 years since I graduated and 8 years since I started working. This job is now my third year in my third job.

  • My first job was as a software engineer at a major company .
  • The second job was as a senior software engineer in a small and medium-sized enterprise , and was later promoted to an embedded software supervisor .
  • The third job is as a software manager for a small and micro enterprise . In terms of job rank, he is at the top right from the start.

In terms of work this year, I have been slow and a little anxious, and I have been busy and leisurely. The personal annual salary package has been slightly increased by 20%, which is gratifying.

2.1 Downward management

Although he is a software manager, the company is relatively small and the software development team he is responsible for is less than 12 people, which is no more than the embedded software development team he was responsible for at his previous company .

There is a professional saying in management, " One person manages 7 people principle ", which means that the number of people directly managed by one person cannot exceed 7 people. If the number of people exceeds 7, hierarchical management can be adopted.

Therefore, at present, the members of my software development team are still directly managed by me, and there is no software supervisor position. According to my own practical evaluation, the limit of the number of software development engineers I directly manage can reach 12 people, and no more will be enough.

As a software manager, as a technical software manager of a small company, I have been working there for more than two years and I am very familiar with it.

On the premise that the company's products are mature and the technical system framework is stable, my main daily tasks are:

  • Adaptation and understanding of new businesses and new needs;
  • Assignment of work tasks, including product prototype design, UI design, front-end and back-end development, embedded-end development, etc.;
  • Management of R&D work, including schedule planning, process management, code review, etc.;
  • Management of work performance, one-to-one communication with different employees based on their different situations, and different performance and bonus incentives;
  • Partial code writing of core modules.

During the entire management process, except for project meetings, I generally do not hold team meetings to report, but choose to chat directly one-on-one.

However, I will ask team members to write weekly reports to facilitate the recording of monthly performance and year-end bonus statistics, so that they can be reviewed retrospectively.

Throughout the work process, I personally feel that the difficulties lie in:

  • New technology route planning and implementation, new system framework selection and construction. For example, this year there are more Linux product development and streaming media system framework construction. It is really difficult to do well under the current manpower configuration.
  • Connect and understand new businesses and new needs. This part isn't difficult, but it is time consuming. But we have to be patient and clarify the needs. Otherwise, the needs are not clear and the product positioning is inaccurate, which is a waste of effort. (Some friends say that this part of the work should be handled by marketing and product managers. However, small companies do not have this dedicated position, so they have no choice but to do it themselves.)

2.2 Upward management

The main way to manage upward is to communicate with leaders. Communication matters include:

  • Elementary level : Everything assigned by the leader is explained, everything is settled, and everything has a response ;
  • Intermediate level : In daily project communication, use as many concise sentences as possible to educate your leaders on the key points , difficulties and innovations related to your work, so that leaders can have a clearer understanding and more accurate expectations about the project and products ;
  • Senior : Report proactively. At the end of every year, I will take the initiative to report to my leaders on my work throughout the year and my work plan for next year. In fact, there is no requirement for this reporting to the leadership, and it is not a common practice for small businesses, but I still do it every year. You don’t have to be proficient in PPT reporting, but you must be able to use it;
  • Advanced : Take the initiative to make demands, take the initiative to strive for progress, and the crying child will be fed;
    • For example, when it comes to salary increases, many employees now passively wait for the company to issue year-end bonuses and the company will give them a salary increase. In fact, if you feel that you have contributed to the company and your abilities have improved a lot, you can definitely bring it up.
    • For example, I proposed a salary increase myself this year. Although the process was a bit tortuous and troublesome, in the end the company agreed to my salary increase, and the annual total package increased by 20%. Despite the economic downturn, my annual total package has bucked the trend and increased by 20%, which I am quite satisfied with.
    • You don’t have to worry about the consequences such as your boss putting your foot down, hiring someone to replace you, or firing you. Confidence and affirmation of your own value are the prerequisites for you to make demands .
  • Invalid : Many employees like to post to their Moments about clocking in overtime and after work, hoping that their bosses can see it, but this is ineffective.
    • The boss will not give a person a salary increase just because he works a lot of overtime, at least I won't.
    • What leaders want to see is not how long you work overtime, but how much you contribute to the company, how much costs you save for the company, etc.
    • If you really want to let your boss know that you have made a lot of contributions, don’t just send the following two check-in screenshots. Instead, refer to Advanced: Proactive Reporting .
    • PS: In 2022, I will be particularly busy in June and November. I will work overtime to the extreme, but the other months will be normal.

2.3 Helpless things

There are places where you are happy and satisfied at work, but there are also places where you are unhappy and helpless .

Last year, the company implemented several projects, and one of them, Project Z, was the most frustrating one.

3. Life summary

In terms of life this year, I took a trip to the 318 Sichuan-Tibet Line for my honeymoon. Shortly after the honeymoon, my wife became pregnant. She was pregnant for ten months, mother and daughter were safe, and they were blessed with a little tiger girl.

3.1 Must drive 318 in this life

I took a wedding leave at the beginning of 2022 for my honeymoon. The original plan was to take the classic 318 Sichuan-Tibet Line, self-driving from Chengdu to Lhasa, and then fly back from Lhasa.

For the trip from Chengdu to Lhasa, we chose a 10-day tour package. My wife and I shared a five-seater large SUV with two other friends, and a leader drove the car. The accommodation costs for the 10-day trip were included. We have to pay for the team leader’s meals and tickets to the scenic spots. During the trip, we can switch cars with the tour leader. However, 318 is full of glaciers and snow all the way, which is a test of driving skills, so most of them are driven by the team leader.

However, when we were driving to Mangkang in a group and preparing to pass the Tibet checkpoint, an epidemic broke out in Chengdu, and Chengdu had a star on our itinerary card.

Therefore, on that day, countless vehicles were blocked in front of Mangkang’s entry into Tibet checkpoint. It lasted until late at night and early in the morning, when the police successively took this large group of people to a very shabby hotel, conducted nucleic acid tests, and withheld their ID cards until the results of the nucleic acid tests came out.

This is the worst hotel we have stayed in since our trip. There is no heating, the electric blanket is broken, and there is no water (due to freezing). Hot water needs to be picked up from the first floor. I had a room on the third floor, but there was no elevator. Don't think that the third floor is not high. You have to know that people with altitude sickness will die if they walk up to one floor.

After the nucleic acid test results came out the next day and everyone could move freely, we immediately communicated with the travel agency whether the subsequent itinerary could continue. The feedback we received was that even if we went forward, we would be quarantined in Linzhi. So the group immediately decided to return. The team leader, Brother Monkey, suggested taking 317 back to Sichuan and flying back from Mianyang Airport. He treated us to the very special Jiangyou Fat Sausage.

The whole trip was a bit tortuous, but quite enjoyable. Although we can't reach Lhasa, the scenery along the way is also very beautiful. For the first time in my life, I rolled a snowball and made a snowman. It's perfect.

3.2 Little Huniu

After returning from our honeymoon, my wife and I didn't use birth control and we got pregnant naturally. Thanks to my wife for giving me a little tiger girl in this Year of the Tiger.

3.3 Mastitis cannot be ignored

There are no systematic parenting tutorials for the entire process of pregnancy, childbirth and confinement, just step by step. When I have free time, I will browse Douyin’s parenting tutorials. If you encounter something you don’t understand, just search on Baidu, or consult a doctor when going to the hospital for a prenatal check-up, etc.

This will cause you to make some low-level mistakes. For example, I made a low-level mistake.

The reason is that while raising the baby, my wife had to get up two or three times every night to feed the baby, burp the baby, and change diapers, and she never slept a full night . I was very distressed, and then I volunteered to suggest that on Friday night and Saturday night, my baby and I would sleep, and my wife would sleep in the second bedroom alone, and we would sleep until dawn.

Something went wrong when I slept, my breasts were engorged and my breasts were blocked. I didn't nurse the baby all night, and I didn't use a breast pump either. The milk was blocked very badly.

When you find hard, nodular, red and swollen breasts, when you wake up with aches all over your body, when your body feels hot but your head, hands and feet are not warm. You should pay attention, you may have mastitis.

If mastitis occurs, remember not to eat greasy food, don't eat big tonic broth, keep it light. So as not to aggravate the situation of blocked milk and engorged milk. Empty the milk regularly and pump it through your baby, either with a breast pump or with a lactation nurse.

3.4 Work-life balance

Raising a newborn requires a lot of time and energy from a family.

However, you are now over 30, your career is still on the upswing, and you are seriously short of time and energy. How can you balance your work and life?

  1. First, you need a lot of help from your family. Get great help from your wife/parents/mother-in-law, etc., or hire a confinement nanny and spend money to buy time. I would like to thank my wife here. In order to ensure that I have enough energy to go to work the next day, she sleeps with the baby in the master bedroom at night, and I sleep alone in the small study at night.
  2. Secondly, you need more self-discipline. When a newborn is born, you will have to spend time with him more or less every day. Everyone's time in a day is fixed and limited. If you take up more time in this place, you will naturally take up less time in other places. If you don't want to affect your work and study time, you will naturally have to reduce your leisure, entertainment and even sleep time.

My current work and life routine is:

  • Get up at 6:20, wash up + eat, drink and defecate;
  • Go out at 6:45 and drive to work;
  • Arrive at the company at 7:10 and start working;
  • 12 o'clock, lunch;
  • 13:00, lunch break;
  • 14 o'clock, go to work;
  • At 17:30, get off work and drive home;
  • At 18:15, get home and prepare dinner + take care of the baby + take a bath;
  • Around 19:00 to 21:00, time to take care of the baby;
  • Around 20 o'clock to 24 o'clock, when the baby fell asleep, I went to the study to either write a blog, work on a project, write code, or use TikTok...
  • After 0 o'clock, after confirming that the baby was asleep, I went back to the study to sleep.

This routine is completely different from what I used to do. I used to go to bed late, get up late, go to work late, and get off work late . Now it’s time to go to bed late, get up early, go to work early, and get off work early .

Every stage of life is completely different, and changes always come quietly.

At this stage of my life, I have an old age, a young age, and a mortgage in the middle. Pressure is everywhere, we can only go against the current, overcome thorns and thorns, and forge ahead.

5. Others

Let’s talk about something else~

5.1 Customization has boundaries, solutions have no boundaries

Several of my classmates started their own businesses a few years ago. When they first started their businesses, they also took on outsourcing to maintain cash income, customized development, and took on any project. After several years of slow development, they are now on the right track and on their own tracks, and they no longer accept customized outsourcing projects.

Some provide vehicle electronics- related solutions, some provide business-to-business ERP- related solutions, some provide rental intelligent management solutions, and so on. In their respective professional fields, they have developed a set of increasingly mature and professional solutions.

For customized development, a set of solutions is only given to one customer. What we do may not be good (demand is not perfect, technical details are not in place), customers may not be satisfied, and we earn less.

A mature solution empowers multiple customers. When customers are satisfied, we can also make considerable profits.

5.2 Interesting projects

This year, I used my spare time to learn about several projects, such as the 24-hour shared self-service study room , the 24-hour shared self-service billiards hall , and underwater communication projects .

They are all good projects. As long as you can do any of them well, you can create a small and beautiful technology company.

7. Postscript

Watching "Summer of the Little Monsters" in the past two days, I was immediately blown away.

I want to leave Langlang Mountain and go out for a try.

Langlangshan is small, but Langlangshan has a mother and Langlangshan has a family.

Poetry and distant places are indeed the ideals of countless people and make people yearn for them. But I think it’s more important to stay grounded and cherish the present moment.

Finally, I would like to introduce my daughter to you. This is my daughter, her nickname is Xiaoxiao~

In the new year, I wish you all may you have endless money and lots of smiles~
