[Comprehensive explanation of Linux commands] 157.Linux commands: usage and differences between killall and pkill

killall

Kill a group of processes using their name

Additional information

killallThe command uses the name of the process to kill the process. It can kill a group of processes with the same name at once. Compared with using killthe command, which requires specifying the PID of the process and combining it with other commands such as psand grepto find the process, killallcombining these two steps into one is a very convenient and practical command.

grammar

killall [选项] [参数]

Options

  • -e: Exactly match the complete name of the process;
  • -l: Ignore case differences (different upper and lower case letters);
  • -p: Kill the process group to which the process belongs;
  • -i: Interactively kill the process. Confirmation is required before killing the process;
  • -l: Print a list of all known signals;
  • -q: If no process is killed, no information will be output;
  • -r: Use regular expressions to match the name of the process to be killed;
  • -s: Replace the default signal "SIGTERM" with the specified signal;
  • -u: Kill the process of the specified user.

parameter

  • Process name: Specify the name of the process to be killed.

Example

# 杀死所有同名进程
killall vi
# 指定向进程发送的信号
killall -9 vi
# 0 信号表示不向进程发送信号,可通过返回值判断进程是否存在,0(存在)1(不存在)
killall -0 vi
echo $?

pkill

Kill process by process name

Additional information

pkillThe command can kill processes by process name. pkillThe usage method is similar to killallthat of directly killing the running program. If you want to kill a single process, use killthe command.

grammar

pkill [选项] [参数]

Options

  • -o: Only send signals to the smallest (starting) process number found;
  • -n: Only send signals to the largest (ending) process number found;
  • -P: Specify the parent process number to send a signal;
  • -g:Specify process group;
  • -t: Specify the terminal to start the process.

parameter

  • Process name: Specify the process name to be found, and also supports grepmatching patterns in similar commands.

Example

pgrep -l gaim
2979 gaim

pkill gaim
也就是说:kill 对应的是PID,pkill 对应的是 command。
