ACI Simulator

introduce

Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) is conceptualized as a distributed, scalable, multi-tenant infrastructure with external endpoint connectivity controlled and grouped through application-centric policies. The Cisco Application Policy Infrastructure Controller (APIC) is a key architectural component that serves as the unifying point for automation, management, monitoring, and programmability of Cisco ACI. Cisco APIC enables deployment, management, and monitoring of any application (sysin) anywhere and provides a unified operating model for the physical and virtual components of the infrastructure. Cisco APIC programmatically automates network configuration and control based on application requirements and policies. It is the central control engine for the broader cloud network, simplifying management while providing great flexibility in how application networks are defined and automated, as well as providing northbound REST APIs. Cisco APIC is a distributed system implemented as a cluster of many controller instances.

The documentation provides compatibility information, usage guidelines, and scaling values that were verified when testing this version of the Cisco ACI Emulator device. Use this document in conjunction with the documents listed in the Related Documents section.

NOTE: The Cisco ACI Simulator Device Server is no longer available for sale after June 20, 2019, as shown here. For recent and future releases, you can download the Cisco ACI Simulator VM, which is an OVA file that can be installed in a virtual machine (VM) on any server that meets the installation requirements.

Cisco ACI Emulator Appliance Release 6.0(1) contains the same functionality as Cisco Application Policy Infrastructure Controller (APIC) Release 6.0(1). For information about this feature, see Cisco Application Policy Infrastructure Controller Release Notes, Release 6.0(1) .

NOTE: The documentation set for this product strives to use unbiased language. For the purposes of this document set, non-bias is defined as language that does not imply discrimination based on age, disability, gender, racial identity, ethnic identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and intersectionality. Exceptions may exist in the documentation due to language hard-coded in the user interface of the product software, language used in the RFP-based document, or language used in referenced third-party products.

Cisco ACI Emulator Device

The purpose of the Cisco ACI Simulator appliance is to provide real, full-featured Cisco APIC software and simulated fabric infrastructure (sysin) of leaf and spine switches in a single physical server. You can use the Cisco ACI Simulator appliance to learn about functionality, practice APIs, and initiate integrations with third-party orchestration systems and applications. Cisco APIC's native GUI and CLI use the same APIs published to third parties.

The Cisco ACI Simulator device contains simulated switches, so you cannot verify the data path. However, some emulated switch ports are mapped to front-panel server ports, which allows you to connect external management entities such as ESX servers, vCenter, vShields, bare metal servers, Layer 4 through Layer 7 services, AAA systems, and other physical or virtual Service equipment. Additionally, the Cisco ACI Simulator device allows faults and alarms to be simulated to facilitate testing and demonstration capabilities.

One production Cisco APIC instance will be provided per server device. In contrast, the Cisco ACI Simulator appliance contains three real Cisco APIC instances and two simulated leaf switches and two simulated spine switches in a single server. Therefore, the performance of the Cisco ACI Simulator device will be lower than when deployed on actual hardware. You can perform operations on mock structures using any of the following functional interfaces:

  • Graphical User Interface (GUI)
  • Command Line Interface (CLI)
  • Application Programming Interface (API)
