For many people, running the Chrome process with a large number of tabs open on the computer every day may be more demanding than running AAA game masterpieces. Chrome's reputation as a "memory killer" has long been familiar, and Google has obviously noticed this and begun to actively improve the performance of this browser. Recently, Google added a new performance page to Chrome to help users manage the amount of memory and power consumed by Chrome.

On Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS, Chrome 108 introduces two new modes: Memory Saver and Energy Saver , giving users more control over how Chrome utilizes the computer's system resources. From now on, users can simply adjust Chrome's performance settings as needed to keep active tabs running smoothly and extend their computer's battery life.

Currently, mobile devices running iOS and Android still don't support personalizing Chrome's performance. But for mobile phone users, maybe social networking, payment and QR code scanning software occupy the majority of memory?

Free up memory and improve running speed

When Memory Saver is turned on, Chrome deactivates tabs that haven't been used for a while to save computer memory and keep active tabs running smoothly. Google says Memory Saver  will theoretically "reduce memory usage by 40%" by kicking idle background tabs out of RAM.

As for whether the 40% effect can be achieved in the end, users need to check it themselves. After opening the Memory Saver, we only need to move the mouse to the right side of the address bar to see the memory currently released by Chrome, and this prompt can also be turned off in the settings.

Of course, even if the user has Memory Saver turned on, the system will still display the browser's idle tabs, and any inactive tabs will be reloaded when the user needs them. Under the settings switch, there is also a list of "Always keep these websites active", allowing users to add web pages that need to be permanently running to ensure that tabs that play videos and run games will not be cleared. Users can turn this feature on and off at any time, so there is no need to worry about tags being lost automatically.

Although such a function is convenient, it is inevitable to be used for comparison. Edge is a browser owned by Microsoft that also uses the Chromium kernel. When many foreign netizens saw this update of Chrome 108, their first reaction was "Isn't this a feature that Edge already has?" There are still many people who choose to continue to stick to Firefox and remain unmoved.

But for Chrome users, this update has finally eliminated many extensions that were used to achieve similar functions, and it also proves that the official is indeed working on solving this troublesome problem - no longer need to prepare for the enemy. Prepare to open two tabs of Chrome at the same time...

Power saving mode, suitable for various occasions

Whether you need to turn on your computer for work when you are away from home or participate in a lengthy meeting, you may encounter a situation where the battery is insufficient; in order to extend the battery life of your device, Google also provides an Energy Saver setting that allows Chrome to reduce the image refresh rate and limit other background tasks to save power.

Whenever the device is not plugged in, or is not plugged in and has a low battery, the Energy Saver automatically turns on and all visual effects (fade animations, smooth scrolling, and video frame rates) are reduced, as is gaming and video performance Changes will occur.

Of course, if you simply feel that various UI animations are redundant and want a simpler experience, then turning on Energy Saver is also a good choice. Google has said that both features will be rolling out "globally for Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS in the coming weeks."

Einstein was a famous multi-tasker

Many people also believe that opening multiple browser tabs at the same time can easily distract people and is a bad work habit. Instead of letting software help solve the problem, it is better to change to better hardware or change habits. How many tabs do you usually have when you open your browser? Welcome to share your complaints about Chrome updates in the comment area and talk about your browser usage habits.
