How to use MidJourney for AI art creation (detailed tutorial)

What is MidJourney?

Insert image description here

Midjourney is a great example of generative AI that creates images based on text prompts. It has become one of the most popular tools for creating AI art, along with Dall-E and Stable Diffusion. Unlike its competitors, Midjourney is self-funded and closed-source, so it knows exactly what's cloudy under the hood. We know that it relies heavily on machine learning techniques such as large language and diffusion models. The results are sometimes surprising, always impressive, and can have a very realistic quality.

Unlike other AI art generators, there is no free trial. It has become so popular that you must sign up for a subscription before using it. That said, their lowest level plan is a reasonable $10 per month. In our experience, it's well worth it considering the level of detail, realism, and creativity it offers. It’s also relatively easy to get started. In a matter of minutes, we generated a series of highly detailed, realistic photos of a dog spending the time of his life in the bed of a truck with just a simple text prompt.

To create artwork, you must sign up for a MidJourney subscription. We'll walk you through the easiest way. Near the bottom of the screen, you'll see a text prompt. • Basic, which costs $10 per month, offers 200 generations per month, and gives you a private chat room to generate images.
  • The next plan, Standard, gives you 15 hours of image generation, unlimited relaxation (slow) generations, and private chat rooms for $30 per month.

If you like what you see, you can always upgrade to a higher level, just enter /subscribeprompt and it will take you to your account where you can easily level up.

Learn about MidJourney’s tools and features

MidJourney can be busy when you first get started. While it's a good idea to check out one of the newcomers' rooms to see how things work, it can be challenging to keep up. There are thousands of people in the novice room at any given time, so it will be difficult to see the image you generate. It's best to download and install the Discord app, where you can use Midjourney to access private messages, making it easier to view and change images. To download the app, click on the floating green bar at the top of the screen. Discord senses your operating system and automatically suggests the correct app version.

Once installed, you can click on the icon in the upper left corner of the Discord app to access your private chat room.

Using Private Messaging provides a less hectic interface where you can generate images and view them easily in a private chat without the distraction of viewing other users' photos. However, joining a group chat room is a great way to get inspired and see what tips others use to produce gorgeous images.

AI art creation in MidJourney

Before you start creating unique AI art, there are some basic commands to be aware of. First, any prompt must start with /. For example, when you want to create a new image, you would enter something like this: /imagine a hyperrealistic image of a dog in the bed of a truck. In less than a minute, your first set of images will appear.

Insert image description here

When your first set of images appear, you'll notice a series of buttons below them. The top row of buttons is for 放大one or more generated images. They are numbered U1 – U4 and are used to identify the images in the sequence. So, for example, if you want to zoom in on the second image, click the U2 button in the top row.

To the right of the first row is the Regenerate button. This is a great tool if you're not satisfied with the first set of images Midjourney creates for you. Click the Regenerate button to ask Midjourney to try another concept based on the original prompt.

Finally, the second row of buttons is used 变体. Numbered V1 – V4, you can select the button corresponding to the image for which you want to create a variant. Once clicked, Midjourney will take the image and create a variation of it.

Tips Tips

Knowing a few tricks is important to successfully using any AI generation software. While this is a relatively new concept, AI art generators like Midjourney are becoming mainstream. Because of this, it’s important to learn how to get the most out of it. Here are some tips and tricks to get you started on your quest to create digital art.

concise and to the point

While this may sound counterproductive, generative AI art follows the same concepts as writing a good blog post. When building tips for Midjourney, it's always better to be descriptive but concise. Giving it too much may overwhelm it, or at least result in an unwelcome image.

For example, check out the differences in these tips. /imagine a photorealistic catwill generate a set of cat images, but a more specific prompt, such as /imagine a photorealistic cat with long white fur and blue eyes(a realistic cat with long white fur and blue eyes), will produce more detailed output.

Use style and medium

One of the best aspects of Midjourney is its ease of use. Literally anyone can create a prompt that produces beautiful art. If you want to improve your game, use styles and mediums in your tips. For example, we upload a picture of ourselves that turns us into a Victorian queen, just tell Midjourney to imagine this woman 想象成1700年代的维多利亚女王as a 1700's era Victorian queen. Using descriptions of the Victorian era and the Queen, Midjourney understood what we wanted. The results are interesting.

You can also have Midjourney create images based on different art styles. In this example we ask for it /imagine a photo of a Goldendoodle created in the style of Leonardo da Vinci(a picture of a golden dog created in the style of Leonardo da Vinci) and the result is this:

Additionally, you can use line art, drawing, painting, or similar media to create images with a unique artistic look. For example, /imagine a black-and-white line drawing of a 1968 Chevrolet Camarothis black and white line drawing of a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro:

combination concept

Another thing to try is combining concepts to create interesting pieces. Instead of prompting MidJourney to create a superhero, add another topic for more targeted results. For example, we used /imagine a Canadian superheroCanadian Superheroes, which resulted in a series of images of superheroes wearing the colors of the Canadian flag:

Thoughts on MidJourney

No matter what type of AI art you create, Midjourney can do it. One of the best things about generative AI art is that you don’t have to be able to draw or paint to be creative. Using predefined tools like blending or customizing aspect ratio, style or image weight parameters, you can create unique artwork that will blow your mind.
