What started Lao Yang's ten-year internet career

Hello everyone, I am Lao Yang.

Time flies, and more than half of the 23 years have passed, and I feel a little dazed.

0 basic layman turned to network engineering, I really have been in this industry for ten years.

There are more and more friends leaving messages and private messages, basically they all want to enter the industry, want to learn, want to get a certificate, want to be promoted...

In fact, I have experienced all these problems.

Relying on my age, I have worked in the Internet industry for the 10th year. I just want to share my story with you today, which may give you some inspiration.

Let me tell you why I think some things will be worthwhile if I choose a direction and do it with my head down.

Today's article reading benefits: "10-year 1v1 consultation quota for online workers (10)"

Maybe after reading this article, you will have more questions to answer, you can private message me and send the password "consultation" .

Every week, I will select 10 friends from private messages for 1v1 detailed Q&A to help you sort out your career dilemma.

01 How did I learn about the Internet business?

I have been engaged in the Internet for half my life, and when I look back, I have almost always been with the Internet.

But the wonderful thing is that I didn't major in network engineering in college.

My college major was very unpopular, and I majored in bioinformatics. Because it is transferred, so there is no choice.

I am really not interested in this major, so unlike other students who just entered the school as a freshman, I have been thinking about what I want to do in the future after entering school.

Because I am very clear that I don't want to do things that are the counterparts of my major, so I think further than other freshmen. After all, knowing what you don't want is easier than knowing what you want.

In order to find a way, I also tried a lot of internships, hoping to get in touch with more people and learn more about development opportunities. By chance, I entered the school's network center .

This network center is to deal with the problems of the school's network equipment, occasionally answering some consultation calls, and occasionally going to the girls' dormitory to help with broadband and the like.

The opportunity that made me really want to work in the network engineering industry was because I came into contact with the Computer Association under the Network Management Center.

There are many seniors in that association who are taking NA and NP exams. It was also at that time that I first heard of IE. I used to think that IE was just a browser.

It was from that time that I learned that there are global certificates such as Cisco and Huawei certifications in the IT industry, which can help you realize the entry network for career change with zero foundation.

In the second semester of my sophomore year, I happened to meet Sibo who came to our school to give a lecture, and explained the entire process and framework of certification in detail. I was a little moved.

I also visited the headquarters of Sibo, where I saw a Cisco CCIE honor wall dedicated to their students. On it was every student certificate who had studied here and obtained CCIE certification. yes.

At that time, I was really shocked... I saw a blank certificate at the end, and I started to look forward to it in my heart.

Looking forward to one day in the future, the position of this blank certificate will have its own number, so that it can have a clear development direction.

I thought a lot, and finally decided to get the CCIE certification before graduating from university. Now it is a 0 foundation, and it will not be the same in the future. It is enough to start learning step by step.

Of course, like you all, I also think that it is really too expensive to take the CCIE exam... For a student, it is really stressful.

So in order to convince my family to support me, I spent 5 hours overnight and went home on a green leather train.

What I said to my parents at home, I think about it now is a bit of a "gamble": "If it is not expensive, I can't go all out, I want to pave the way for my own future, and I will earn it back in the future, can I? "

After discussing for a long time, after finally gaining the support of my family, I finally started my CCIE certification study journey in 2011.

02 How difficult is it to get started with the Internet?

I don’t know how the learning experience with the students majoring in network engineering is. It took me 11 months, starting from 0, finishing the CCIE, and getting the CCIE certificate. I feel really sour.

According to data, the average time for CCIE test takers with 0 basic entry is about 15 months, which is one year and three months.

At that time, I was quite happy to know this data, after all, I was still above the average.

However, it was precisely in order to obtain the certification as soon as possible that I really spent a lot of effort. Let me summarize a few points and share with you:

01 preview is very important

If you are really interested in this thing and you really want to learn it, you will definitely be eager to do it... I am a typical example of this mentality.

Before the formal course training of CCIE started, I previewed the 700+ pages of CCNA textbooks issued by the organization, and the same is true for the subsequent CCNP courses and CCIE courses.

Read the book first, get a general idea of the content, and mark the parts you don't understand first, so that you can learn more targetedly.

That was also the first summer vacation that I did not go to play, because I also studied the BOOTCAMP course in the institution.

Maybe I haven’t worked so hard in the college entrance examination. It’s amazing to think about it. I don’t know where I got so much motivation at that time.

Don't think that I'm so cursy, in fact, I did it subconsciously. After all, my family doesn't have that much money, so if my parents gamble with me, I'm afraid that I won't get a good result.

So work extra hard, just not to regret it, just to be worth it.

The other 0-based novices in the training class felt that they were not "smooth" enough to learn, and they often couldn't keep up, but I could not only keep up with the rhythm, but even give them a few questions.

Therefore, I still feel that "preview" is a very important thing.

02 Create learning opportunities

This learning opportunity is not just to follow the rhythm step by step, but to have an additional opportunity to acquire "passive learning" skills.

At that time, because my study pace was not bad, I often helped other students answer questions.

My lecturer saw my momentum and invited me to be a teaching assistant so that I could better help other students.

I agreed, and I have many more opportunities than others to continuously review the previous technical points. Every time I talk about it again, my own thinking becomes clearer.

When I was preparing for the IE exam, a group of students from different schools and family backgrounds were locked in a small room, practicing versions and troubleshooting from morning to night every day.

We will also log in to each other's environment, set up various faults for each other, do various things, and then solve those problems by ourselves.

So I recall that when I first started, I was still full of warmth.

In the early stage, when you first entered, you may need some transitional period. Some words are really not seen in other places, and there are only here, just figure it out.

The rest follow the teacher's rhythm, and it is not too difficult.

03 Is IE certification really easy to test?

In April 2012, I signed up for the IE exam and flew to Beijing to take the exam.

Although, the more I learned later, the more I felt that there should be no big problem with IE, but when I waited for the result, I still panicked a lot.

I remember that I checked the PASS on the official website at 6 o'clock in the evening , and my first reaction was to jump up and be invincibly excited.

Looking back now, the degree of excitement is probably similar to the mood of winning the first prize in the lottery.

However, what surprised me most at the time was that the results had only been out for a few days, and when I was still visiting the Forbidden City with my classmates, I received an interview invitation call from a large factory...

At that time, I was only in my junior year, and I hadn't even written a resume yet.

I found out later that it was Sibo who released the news that I passed CCIE, which attracted some large and small factories to cast olive branches.

It's really not my Versailles, I have a cross major, a second school (ordinary one), and a three-zero foundation. But because I won the CCIE, I entered the first manufacturer along the internal push, and I had no chance to experience the fierce offer competition among fresh graduates.

At that time, the annual salary of fresh graduates was about 50,000 to 60,000. At that time, I won 150,000.

How valuable it is to have a clear goal and move forward firmly, whoever really tries will know.

04 After entering the network, have I regretted it?

In my first internship, I joined a well-known manufacturer as a first-line after-sales engineer because of Sibo's network.

After doing it, I found that although there are many types of products that I will contact after sales, it is suitable for newcomers, but if I want to develop in depth, it is still a bit meaningless.

In 2017, I changed to a new factory and entered the R&D department as a first-line tester. One year later, I was successfully promoted from tester to management.

I have seen a lot of big projects. I have been in touch with front-line execution, management and overall planning. I understand the difficulty of cooperation between various departments, understand the psychology of high-level executives, and know what the small network workers are worried about.

So under this premise, if you ask me whether I regret choosing to be a network engineer, the answer is obvious— I really don’t regret it, and even now I often feel lucky because I resolutely chose the direction of network engineering at that time.

Without the choice I made, I would not be who I am now. Whether it is choosing a research certificate, or choosing after-sales, testing, or promotion to management, I feel very rewarding.

If possible, I sincerely hope that you can take the IE certification test earlier, and the sooner you get it, the longer you can hold the bonus.

Later, I also realized that rather than leading a team in the company to complete one project after another, I prefer to let more people get rid of confusion and clarify their future path.

So I started to post and build a self-media account, posting a lot of content about the Internet, and finally I can meet you here.

Finally, I would like to mention a few points to you:

·  It is not enough to pass the textual research. The important thing is to have the ability to use knowledge to solve practical problems during the learning process, otherwise it is just paper IE .

·  Taking the IE test does not mean that I am very good. Compared with me 10 years ago, there is still a gap in this market. After all, they are all IEs, and not everyone can make a smooth career transition.

·  After graduation, your biggest weapon for promotion and salary increase is whether you have the self-control to keep yourself at a continuous and effective learning pace.

·  Each industry has its own bright spots, and each major has well-developed workers after graduation. The key point is that if you are interested, dare to study, persevere, you will have a happy ending in the end.

Therefore, Lao Yang also very much hopes that you who pay attention to me will have the opportunity to break through the fog in life and work hard to reach the desired distance.
