Introduction to the communication LNS protocol between LoRaWAN gateway and network server (NS)

Connecting the LoRaWAN Gateway to the LoRaWAN® Network Server (LNS) is a two-step process that uses WebSocket as the transport protocol to exchange text records containing JSON-encoded objects.

First, the gateway queries the LNS for the URI of the actual connection endpoint of the LNS. Second, it establishes a data connection with this endpoint to receive setup information. From then on, LoRa® uplink and downlink frames are exchanged over this connection. In this way, the LNS can dynamically assign gateways to different data connection endpoints in order to distribute load or to facilitate geographic proximity.

The LNS service that distributes data connection endpoints can be separate from the LNS. Additionally, the service may run on a server separate from the LNS connection endpoints, which may be distributed across different servers.
