The origin of Linux

If you want to talk about Linux, you must first talk about Unix. Before the birth of Linux, there was Unix, because Unix is not free and open source, and you must buy licenses to use it, and few people can afford it.

In 1983, Richard Stallman created the GNU project for a free software, Unix-like, POSIX-compliant operating system. As part of this plan, he wrote the GNU General Public License (GPL).

After the launch of the GNU project, there were many supporters, so a lot of great software was produced during this period, but unfortunately, there has never been a more perfect operating system. Until 1991, Linus Benedict Torvalds, a Finnish university student, developed a Unix-like operating system based on his interests. Once released, it was sought after by many enthusiasts. This system is Linux.

origin of the name

Linus Torvalds was going to call his release Freax - a portmanteau of "fread", "free" and "x" (a reference to Unix). During the first half year of developing the system, he stored the files under the filename "Freax". Torvalds considered the name Linux, but dismissed it because he felt it was too self-centered.

To facilitate development, in September 1991, he uploaded those files to the FTP server (ftp.funet.fi) of the Helsinki University of Technology (HUT). Ari Lemmke, Torvalds' colleague who managed that server at HUT, felt that the name "Freax" was not very good, and changed the name of the project to "Linux" without consulting Torvalds. But later, Torvalds also agreed with the name "Linux": "After much discussion, he admitted that the name Linux is better. In the makefile of the 0.01 version of the Linux source code, the name 'Freax' is still used, and after 'Linux' This name is used. So, the name Linux is not pre-thought, it's just that it's widely accepted

Linux mascot

In 1996, Torvalds chose a penguin as its mascot for Linux. This is why there is a penguin when reading Linux-related books.

The above is an introduction to the concept of Linux. Learn the new by reviewing the past. Recently, I plan to start to reorganize the basic instructions of Linux. If you want to review it with me, don’t forget to pay attention to TouTalk. Let’s recall and make progress together.
