Jump to the top! Replace MySQL as the most popular database!

In May 2023, more than 90,000 developers participated in Stackoverflow's annual survey, which mainly involves how developers learn and upgrade, which tools they are using, and which tools they want.

"PS: We have extracted information from relevant databases and shared them with you."

This year, PostgreSQL replaced MySQL as the most popular database. Professional developers are more likely to use PostgreSQL (50%) than those who learned to code, and those who learned to code are more likely to use MySQL (54%). Professional developers and people learning to code use MongoDB in similar proportions, and it is the second most popular database for people learning to code (after MySQL).

favorite database

Among all valid questionnaires (76,634 respondents), 45.55% of developers are using PostgreSQL, surpassing MySQL for the first time , which makes PostgreSQL top the list of database popularity. MySQL took a back seat, with 41.09% of developers using MySQL. Followed by SQLite (accounting for 30.9%). Oracle ranked ninth, accounting for 9.8%.

Among other programmers (4,009 respondents), MySQL remains the most used database, followed by SQLite and PostgreSQL respectively.

Survey Audience: Other Programmers

Most Popular Development Language

2023 continues JavaScript's 11th consecutive year as the most-used programming language. Python has overtaken SQL as the third most used language, but for those who are not professional developers or learning to code (other coders), Python ranks first. Several technologies moved up one place this year (Bash/Shell, C, Ruby, Perl, and Erlang), and two of them moved up two places (Elixir and Lisp). Lua, an embedded scripting language, has climbed seven spots since 2022. The top three technologies for professional developers are the same as last year - JavaScript, HTML/CSS, and SQL.

database to learn

Among all respondents (69,380 respondents), those who were using MySQL database, 12,824 of them wanted to learn PG. Secondly, more than 10,000 users who are using PostgreSQL want to use Redis next year; more than 9,000 Redis users want to use PostgreSQL next year, which shows that there are complementary situations in the top ten databases.
