The latest development version of GIMP has been ported to GTK3

GIMP recently released a new development version , and while it's not stable (ie bugs are expected), this release gives us our best look at what the stable GIMP 3.0 release will contain. For those interested, the release candidate for GIMP 3.0 is close.

First, the GIMP developers say that the GTK3 port of GIMP is "officially done." If you've followed GIMP's development over the past few years, you know that porting an application to GTK3 can be a dreadful affair. It must have been a relief for the developers to see all that blood (hopefully not literally), sweat, and tears pay off.

Second, this version of GIMP includes an option to "merge menus and title bars", aka title bars. This option is not enabled by default, and some minor behavioral bugs have been reported in some cases. To try it out, open Preferences > Image Windows, tick "Combine menus and title bars", and restart the application.

Other highlights include:

  • Toggles showing/hiding the text editor toolbox on the canvas
  • GEGL filters now have easy menu access
  • Improved alignment and distribution tools
  • Dark theme is now slightly lighter (previous version still works)
  • Medium Gray (CIELAB) layer fill options
  • The color picker tool has a "grayscale (%)" display mode
  • Supports import/export of PAM and QOI images
  • Supports import/export of PSD files with clipping paths
