EMC VNX Unified Storage Shutdown Sequence Method

EMC Unfied's VNX storage system is much more complicated than a simple block system. It is equivalent to two sets of storage systems, both in terms of physical hardware and logical software OS.

Customers often encounter the need to shut down and power off the storage system or even physically relocate the storage system due to power outages in the computer room or relocation of the computer room. The data mover cannot be started normally, and the cache dirty situation occurs, which seriously affects the customer's business and cannot continue to provide, and even causes the loss of customer data.

This article gives a detailed description of the shutdown sequence of the EMC VNX Unifed storage system, and I hope it will be helpful to friends. If you have other questions, you can add wechat at StorageExpert to continue the discussion.

The following methods are applicable to VNX1 and 2nd generation products. Due to the different OE versions at the customer site, what you see may be different from what is described in this article. The differences cannot be listed here, but the general direction is the same.

  1. Notify user of shutdown

  2. Log in to the unisphere of the console CS0 to check the system status, this is a graphical interface

  3. You can also log in to the console through the serial port, use the nasadmin user to log in, after logging in, su to root authority

Check system health status

# /nas/bin/nas_checkup

This command will check the console control station, data mover and storage system to make sure there are no major errors. If there is a major error, be sure to resolve it before shutting down.

4. Since the filer OE 7.1.74.5 version, there is a single CLI command (single CLI command) power off function.

# /nas/sbin/nas_halt -sp now // This is a command to power off everything, including the console, data mover and Array storage

If you only need to power off the filer part, use the following command, the following command does not shutdown storage

# /nasmcd/sbin/nas_halt now  (To shutdown Control Stations and Data Movers only)

********************************  WARNING! *****************************

You are about to HALT this VNX including all of its Control Stations and Data Movers. DATA will be UNAVAILABLE when the system is halted.

Note that this command does *not* halt the storage array.

ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO CONTINUE? [yes or no] :

This power off process takes about 20 minutes to power off.

5. If you only power off the file part, # /nas/sbin/nas_halt now

Must be root privileges to execute

6. Check whether the DME is powered off, and unplug the power cord.

From the appearance, check whether the power cord can be unplugged. The picture above is the LED indicator of the data mover (there are two kinds of LEDs, one is the fault indicator and the other is the power indicator). In addition, when viewed from the back of the Data mover, the fault LED of the IO module of the management module is also on.

After the successful shutdown of the data mover, the fault LED light of the enclosure is on, and the LED light of the Power supply is off.

7. Determine whether the control station has successfully shut down? Unplug the power cord.

The figure below shows the status of the console LED indicators of the VNX1 generation

The LED indicator of the successful shutdown of the console is only the 6th light, that is, the network light is on, and the others are off.

The figure below shows the status of the LED indicators on the console of the VNX2 generation, for reference.

8. If you only shut down the filer part, you can stop here. If you want to continue to shut down part of the array storage block. Still need to continue the following operation

To stop all IO means to stop the host, so that there will be no IO. At this time, the storage will flush the data in the memory to the disk. It is recommended to wait for 5 minutes to continue the subsequent operations after stopping the IO.

9. To shut down the SP, do not directly unplug the power cord on the SP. For VNX1 generation equipment, there are two separate SPS batteries, and turn off the power switch on the SPS.

Wait for the SPS LED light to go out before unplugging the power cord.

For VNX2 generation equipment, because there is no special SPS battery, it becomes a BBU battery, so you can directly unplug the power cord, but you have to wait until the LED lights are off before doing other actions.

10. Finally, if there is an extension cabinet, you can unplug the power cord of the extension cabinet.
