Causes and Symptoms Events
For better problem overview and options filtering, and to identify root cause problems, problem events can be marked as cause events or symptom events:
Events can be marked as cause events or symptom events
All new problems are considered cause events by default
Single or multiple symptom events can be linked to a cause event
Multiple new {EVENT.CAUSE} macros introduced to render Cause Event Data
Multiple event-related API calls now support filtering by cause and symptom events
Instant propagation of configuration changes
Instant synchronization of active or passive Zabbix proxy and agent changed configurations. Active and passive Zabbix proxies can pick up almost real-time any configuration changes made in the Zabbix instance:
ProxyConfigFrequency parameter supports time intervals as fast as 1 second
Zabbix proxy only receives configuration deltas - configuration changes performed during configuration update intervals
Design to synchronize delta configurations during Zabbix proxy configuration updates significantly improves performance
Active Zabbix agent only synchronizes configurations A complete copy of the configuration is received only when there are configuration changes during the interval:
configuration changes can be propagated to the active Zabbix agent on the fly
RefreshActiveChecks parameter supports values in the range 1-86400
This behavior is supported by both Zabbix agent and Zabbix agent2
Zero downtime Zabbix upgrade
To improve the Zabbix component upgrade process (especially for large environments), Zabbix proxy is now backward compatible within the same LTS release cycle:
Zabbix proxy is fully supported if Zabbix proxy has the same major version as Zabbix server
For non-LTS versions (eg: Zabbix server 6.4), if Zabbix proxy has a major version earlier than Zabbix server but in the same LTS release (eg: Zabbix proxy6.0/6.2), then mark Zabbix proxy as obsolete
For LTS version (for example: Zabbix server 7.0), if the main version of Zabbix proxy is earlier than Zabbix server but not earlier than the previous LTS version (for example: Zabbix proxy 6.0), then mark Zabbix proxy as obsolete.
Obsolete Zabbix proxy still supports data collection and remote command execution
. In other cases, Zabbix proxy is not supported.
SNMP discovery and bulk data collection speed and performance improvements
The GetBulk request is a new method that can collect a large number of SNMP indicators in batches with minimal impact on the performance of the monitoring terminal:
Introduced a new walk[OID1, OID2,…] item
Use GetBulk to request bulk polling for items indexed by SNMP A
new SNMP preprocessing step converts the collected SNMP bulk data into JSON format
Zabbix will redesign the official template to use New SNMP bulk collection
Traditional style bulk requests that existed before Zabbix 6.4 have been renamed to combined requests
new menu layout
The Zabbix menu layout has been redesigned. The goal of the new menu layout is to provide logical and consistent access to the main functions of Zabbix:
Dashboard has been moved to the first-level menu A
new Alarms first-level menu has been added with a submenu related to Alarms A
new User first-level menu has been added with a submenu related to User Management A
new Data Collection first-level menu has replaced Configure the first-level menu and contain submenus related to configuring data acquisition
Real-time streaming of metrics and events over HTTP
Stream metrics and events from Zabbix to external systems via HTTP:
Use Zabbix as part of a data pipeline by streaming metrics and events into a message broker such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or Amazon Kinesis and tune system behavior based on data collected in real time Stream key metrics from applications and
microservices and events to data lakes or data warehouses for long-term storage
Stream metrics and events to external AI engines for more insights
Introduced a new Connectors submenu under the [Management] – [General] menu
Connectors submenu Allows users to define external systems to which item values and events can be pushed
Zabbix server as a client and pushes data to remote endpoints
Streaming over HTTP via REST API
Optionally streaming item values or trigger events
It is possible to stream only data that matches a tag filter
Template Versioning
Introducing template versioning to improve ease of template management and usage:
Template versioning can be used to optimize your CI/CD process and automatically keep templates up to date using Zabbix API
There are new fields in the template list - Vendor and Version
The latest Zabbix 6.4 templates have been updated to have Vendor and Version fields
Existing templates will have empty Vendor and Version fields
Development framework for creating Zabbix widgets
To simplify the workflow for creating custom widgets, several design changes were introduced:
Widgets have been converted to front-end modules
Modules are now fully self-contained - no existing files need to be modified
Public development docs contain guidelines and a detailed overview of the widget creation framework
Built-in widgets have been moved to the ui/widgets directory
Custom widgets should Residing in the ui/modules/ directory
Front-end modules can load custom JavaScript/CSS/Images
Optional interface for Server-initiated checks
Check related item types directly from Zabbix server or Zabbix proxy no longer require a host interface:

Simplifies media type configuration for multiple email service providers
Zabbix 6.4 simplifies the workflow of configuring new email medium types by allowing you to choose from several preconfigured email service providers:
Choose from Gmail, Gmail Relay, O365, O365 Relay, or Generic SMPT
SMTP and security settings for these email service providers are preconfigured
Generic SMTP configuration corresponds to the old default email medium type configuration
