On June 14, the official account of Clarivate Analytics updated the article, mentioning that this year's 2023 Journal Citation Reports ( JCR ™) will be officially released at the end of June !
Clarivate Analytics, as the publisher of the Journal Citation Report JCR, publishes a JCR report every year.
Judging from the release time in the past 6 years, this year's impact factor is expected to be released next week.
1. What adjustments will be made this year?
Let’s review the 2023 impact factor adjustment announced by Clarivate Analytics on July 26, 2022.
1. Adjustment of impact factor coverage
The 2023 Journal Citation Reports™ (JCR™) will assign journal impact factors to all journals included in the Web of Science Core Collection.
This means journal Impact Factor coverage will expand from Science Citation Index Extended (SCIE™) and Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI™) journals to Arts & Humanities Citation Index (AHCI™) and the multidisciplinary Emerging Sources Citation Index™ (ESCI™) journals .
That is, all journals included in the Web of Science Core Collection, including those in the arts and humanities, will have a Journal Impact Factor .
After this adjustment:
For the first time, nearly 9,000 journals from more than 3,000 publishers , many of them small publishers in developing countries, will have a JIF.
The number of gold open access journals with a journal impact factor will increase by 8%.
The number of journals with a Journal Impact Factor from countries in the Global South will increase by more than 5%.
In the future, ESCI will also have an impact factor, which means that new journals will soon be able to obtain an impact factor, and of course it may blur the difference between SCIE and ESCI.
2. The decimal place of the impact factor will be adjusted
In addition, journal impact factors in the 2023 JCR will be rounded to one decimal place , rather than the current three decimal places, to encourage users to refer to other metrics and descriptive metric in JCR when comparing journals. data.
That is, since JIF only rounds one decimal place, there will be more tie-ranks for SCI/SSCI journals , which will make the number of journals in each division possibly different, and you will see that some quartiles will contain more than previous years or fewer journals.
2. Prediction of 2023 JCR Impact Factor
The iNature editorial department predicts the impact factors of some major biological and medical journals based on the latest web of science data ( for reference only). According to past experience, the accuracy rate has reached more than 90% (the predicted impact factor and the final impact The factor fluctuates at 10%), but in the end it still depends on the impact factor results updated by Web of Science every year in June.
According to the partition table of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, there are 8 comprehensive journals in District 1, and the impact factors of Nature and Science remain high , both exceeding 55; Research began to be published in 2018, and the latest impact factor is predicted to increase slightly. Due to the large number of articles published by Nature Communications , PNAS and Science Advances , the impact factor does not change much.
For the four top medical journals , the predicted impact factors are all over 100, the impact factor of NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE reached 171 , and the impact factor of Lancet dropped significantly to 171.
For domestic journals , we found that the impact factor of Cell Research is expected to be 45, which remains relatively stable; Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy is predicted to have an impact factor of over 40; Molecular Plant is predicted to exceed 25, which may be the highest impact factor of all plant non-review journals Magazine. However, some domestic magazines have published too many reviews and letter articles. Compared with other magazines, there is still room for further improvement.
Some of the Nature and its sub-journals that we pay more attention to are generally stable, and the one with the highest impact factor is Nature Medicine (non-review category).
Science and its sub-journals generally have lower impact factors.
For Cell and its sub-journals , we found that the impact factors of other journals are relatively stableexcept for a few journals with relatively large fluctuations (such as Cancer Cell ).
Some special issues that are more concerned , such as: The impact factor of CA magazine will drop from 286 to 246, Blood will rise from 25 to 27, Molecular Cancer will drop from 41 to 38; Cancer Discovery will drop from 38 to 28; due to limited space, we list 92 journals that met all predictions. Due to the rush of time, if there are any mistakes, please inform the iNature editorial department in time. In addition, this impact factor prediction is for reference only and is not the final impact factor result.
