—— Liao Yuan's "A Tree of Spring Breeze"

Who is Liao Yuan?

Liaoyuan, styled Juelao, nicknamed Foyin, was the son of Fuliang Wang. A famous poet monk and Zen monk in the Northern Song Dynasty. Lives at Jinshan Temple in Zhenjiang, and is friendly with Su Shi, Huang Tingjian and others.

The story behind this poem says that when Su Shi was talking about Zen with Qin Guan (Qin Shaoyou), a man happened to pass by, his body was so dirty that he was covered with lice.

Seeing this, Su Shi said, "That man was so dirty that lice grew out of the dirt all over his body." But Qin Guan disagreed, pointing out: "The lice don't grow out of the dirt, but out of the broken cotton wadding. "

The two couldn't argue over this, so they asked Zen Master Foyin to judge.

Su Dongpo found Zen Master Foyin first, and asked again and again: "Master Zen Master! Do help me. If you say that lice are dirty, don't let me lose to Qin Shaoyou!" Chan Master Foyin smiled and nodded: "Okay ,OK."

As soon as Su Dongpo left, Qin Shaoyou came and said to Foyin, "Zen Master! You must help me and say that lice are made from cotton wool, so that I can win against Su Dongpo." Chan Master Foyin also nodded repeatedly: "Okay! OK!"

Both of them believed that Zen Master Foyin would help him, thinking that they were sure of success.

The next day, in front of the two of them, Zen Master Foyin resolved the dispute with one sentence: "Speaking of lice, his head is made of dirt, and his body is made of cotton wool." Su Dongpo and Qin Shaoyou were stunned, and they all admired it The wisdom of Chan Master Foyin resolved the dispute between the two in an impartial way, which was very ingenious.

Foyin immediately wrote this Zen poem.

This verse is a wonderful way to resolve disputes. You can see that a tree has two kinds of spring breeze. The southern branches are warmer, while the northern branches are colder. But there are two branches of one tree. There is a ready-made passage from the west. low score? What are lice? Zen Master Foyin advised Su Dongpo and Qin Shaoyou: "One piece goes west and the other goes east, there is no need for the two of you to argue."
