The East China Cup College Student Mathematical Modeling Invitational Competition (also known as the "East China Cup" Mathematical Modeling Competition) is a competition initiated by the School of Mathematical Sciences of Fudan University and organized by the East China Mathematical Modeling Alliance. Since its launch 23 years ago, the competition has greatly improved in scale and influence. It has become an inter-school communication competition for dozens of key universities in East China and even the whole country, and enjoys a high reputation among colleges and universities across the country. The competition attracted students from all over the country, including many "Double First-Class" universities.

The purpose of the competition is to stimulate students' enthusiasm for learning mathematics, broaden their knowledge, improve students' comprehensive abilities in independently analyzing problems, establishing mathematical models, using computer technology to simulate and solve practical problems, and writing papers, and encourage young students to participate in basic and applied discipline research. Introduce the old and bring forth the new, enhance students' understanding of the value of mathematical science theory and its application, and strengthen the connection between mathematics and economics and finance, computer, electronic engineering, biology, physics, chemistry and other disciplines, promote teaching and education reform, and cultivate students' creative spirit and the awareness of cooperation, enhance the students' awareness of scientific innovation and team spirit, and lay a solid foundation for the students to enter the society and serve the society in the future.

The competition topics generally come from practical problems that have been appropriately simplified and processed in the fields of engineering technology, management science, and social livelihood. Participants are not required to master in-depth professional knowledge in advance, and only need to have relevant knowledge of basic mathematics courses in ordinary colleges and universities. There is greater flexibility in the topic for contestants to use their creativity. Participants should complete a paper (answer sheet) including model assumption, establishment and solution, calculation method design and computer implementation, result analysis and testing, model improvement, etc. according to the topic requirements. The main criteria for the competition awards are the rationality of assumptions, the creativity of modeling, the correctness of results and the clarity of written expressions. The evaluation of the final paper will largely take into account the innovative ideas of the participants, and for creative ideas, special prizes will be awarded according to the opinion of the jury.
