Linux Mint 21.2 and LMDE 6 to support Secure Boot within a month

The Linux  Mint team has shown off some new notification and tooltip topics in early May, with some explanation of the release timeline; also announced that there are issues with Secure Boot and that, for now, new installations should be done with Secure Boot disabled.

The Linux Mint team has yet to release plans for Linux Mint 21.2 and LMDE 6, but the release date is close. LMDE is the abbreviation of Linux Mint Debian Edition, and new versions will be released after the main version of Debian. Debian 12 will be released in June, so LMDE 6 will follow.

According to the blog post, LMDE 6 will be released after Linux Mint 21.2 (IT Home Note: The official EDGE ISO version uses Linux kernel 5.19), roughly estimated to be released in June. Linux Mint releases usually follow a 2-week beta period.

In recent years, the Mint team has focused on modernizing the Cinnamon desktop that comes with Linux Mint by default. In May of this year, the team decided to showcase new tooltips and notifications that use user-selected accent colors. However, some visually impaired users disliked the change, saying the text was too difficult to read, according to the blog's comments section.

One user complained about the new notifications and tooltips and suggested making them optional. This enhancement gives users more control over their desktops.

Finally, for users planning to install Linux Mint, it is recommended to turn off Secure Boot. Canonical has updated Ubuntu's shim-signed package to support Secure Boot, which is now unavailable for Ubuntu derivatives. The Linux Mint team is working on a fix for a future ISO, but for now just disable Secure Boot.
