Development of Linux Mint 21 "Vanessa" started a few months ago, and the upcoming release will be based on Canonical's latest Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish) operating system series, and Linux Mint 21 will follow Ubuntu 22.04 LTS in the next five years. Get support.
Linux Mint 21 will ship not only the newer core components of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (such as the Linux kernel, Mesa graphics stack, GCC, GNU C libraries), but also an updated version of the homegrown Cinnamon desktop environment, Cinnamon 5.4.
Other updates:
- Bluetooth improvements: Linux Mint 21 will feature the Blueman 2.3 GTK+ Bluetooth Manager as a drop-in replacement for the Blueberry Bluetooth configuration tool currently used in the Linux Mint 20 series
- Home Directory Encryption in Linux Mint 21 Installer
- WebP image format support in Xviewer image viewer
- Thumbnails in file manager also support preview of WebP images
- Since Linux Mint took over the development of the Timeshift backup tool, this Linux Mint 21 release ships with an updated version capable of figuring out the space needed for the next snapshot when used in rsync mode, so you don't end up with zero disk space backup
- Linux Mint 21 includes default os-prober, bringing dual boot detection out of the box
- Linux Mint 21 removes systemd-oom due to some performance issues
