Studies have shown that the bacterial communities in the skin and gut of patients with psoriasis are significantly different from those of healthy people; however, the existence of a unique blood microbiome in patients has yet to be investigated. Here, we report in depth the differences in bacterial communities in plasma-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) between patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis (PSOs) and healthy controls (HCs).

EVs are a variety of cell-derived membrane structures secreted by living cells, present in biological fluids including plasma, and involved in pathological processes. EVs have attracted scientific attention due to their role in intercellular communication and their translational potential as therapeutic agents and non-invasive biomarkers of disease. As material and information communicators between cells, studies have shown that they are related to the pathogenesis of psoriasis. In the dysregulated skin and intestinal environment of psoriasis patients, pathogen-derived EVs have been shown to modulate disease development, and beneficial microbial-derived EVs have been found to improve inflammation and affect distant host cells. Therefore, the use of third-generation sequencing to deeply analyze the source composition of EVs has become a good means to comprehensively and systematically detect the relationship between bacteria and hosts.
