Not long ago, Embedded World 2023 was held at the Nuremberg Exhibition Center in Germany. During the exhibition, Imagination not only shared the topic of RISC-V, but also announced the latest cooperation progress with partners such as Telechips, CoreAVI and Ashling.

Automotive solutions have always been the theme of past events in Nuremberg and this year was no exception. As ADAS and AV become more and more important, we see a rapid growth of intelligent driving solutions in the market. While fully autonomous driving isn’t here yet, it’s very close, and our customers and partners agree that the field has huge potential: The next 10 years will be key to how the world responds to autonomous driving.

When it comes to assisted or driverless solutions, the safety of drivers and passengers is at the heart of the issue. That's why we ensure that GPU, AI and CPU IP meet the stringent requirements of functional safety, according to ISO 26262.

We partnered with CoreAVI , who not only understand the importance of safety-critical automotive graphics, but also have expertise in building safety solutions for the automotive, industrial and avionics markets. CoreAVI's Vulkan®-based graphics driver now supports our IMG BXS GPUs, enabling developers to create advanced HMI experiences that meet the complex safety requirements of the rapidly evolving automotive market. It also enables us to provide customers with enhanced API access, allowing developers to seamlessly migrate safety-critical software stacks between different chips for faster product deployment.

hardware virtualization technology

When it comes to the driving experience, advanced electronics have revolutionized how we interact with in-vehicle infotainment systems and cockpit displays. OEMs are focusing on user experience to differentiate themselves from the competition.

But efficiently and safely driving a car with multiple displays requires the right tools. This requires hardware virtualization technology. It provides a secure headless (HLC) solution that enables the underlying automotive system to manage multi-display and multi-channel camera inputs while handling image signal processing and microcontroller subsystems in isolated safe islands to enable Fully functional safety.

Android based widescreen IVI running on Telechips Dolphin3 SoC - PowerVR Series9XTP

Telechips TCC805x (Dolphin 3) SoCs leverage our PowerVR GPU IP to deliver superior performance for 2D and 3D graphics. As a hypervisor-less solution, Dolphin3 enables manufacturers to cost-effectively and securely run different operating systems on a single chip. Our own HyperLane hardware virtualization technology enables different tasks to be submitted to the GPU in parallel. In short, together with Telechips, we ensure that the driver always has all critical instrument cluster data in hand, while running efficient and vibrant infotainment and cockpit graphics.

The RISC-V market is growing rapidly

While we're excited about automotive innovation, we're seeing incredible growth in RISC-V. More and more markets are adopting this innovative ISA, which is fast becoming the architecture to support leading-edge embedded systems as well as artificial intelligence and machine learning. This technology allows more manufacturers to customize chips, and companies of all sizes can take full advantage of RISC-V and compete in the market. As an open architecture, it removes barriers across industries and encourages the development of shared tools and resources to benefit a growing community of members.

Imagination recognizes the real potential for innovation and collaboration in the RISC-V space. We are developing a family of CPUs that take full advantage of this architecture, and the IMG RTXM-2200 is the first product on our roadmap. Strategic partnerships with companies in this space such as Alibaba, SiFive, Andes and StarFive allow us to combine our expertise and grow the RISC-V community together, while providing customers with the cutting-edge innovation they seek. In our latest partnership with Ashling, we are focused on providing enhanced software support for RISC-V development through the company's RiscFree SDK. This means our customers can take advantage of a wider range of development tools to support their design journey and be able to reduce time to market.

Cultivation of the next generation of talents

When it comes to RISC-V, we want to ensure that the next generation of engineers has the right tools to succeed. This is where the Imagination University Program (IUP) comes in. We have developed a number of undergraduate courses in graphics, artificial intelligence, and RISC-V. The latter course covers two semesters of undergraduate study material using RISC-V on an FPGA board and has received excellent feedback from academics and students.

At this year's Embedded Expo, Imagination showcased new developments and collaborations in automotive, RISC-V and more. Looking forward to seeing you next year.
