vCenter Server Patch Upgrade Guide

1 Overview

After the main version of vCenter is released, patches or sub-version numbers will be released according to the discovery of security vulnerabilities to fix vulnerabilities or optimize functions. This document uses the upgrade from version 6.7.0.40000 to version 6.7.0.54000 as an example to introduce the upgrade steps.

2. Operation points

  • Prepare the patch image file
  • Mount to VCSA virtual machine
  • Install patches via SSH command or web console
     

3. Detailed operation steps 

3.1 Download the patch

  • Access Product Patches - VMware Customer Connect  (requires (registration) account login)
  • Select VC, version we upgrade the 6.7 patch, select 6.7.0 in the drop-down menu, click the search button
  • The latest patch is at the top, click the download button at the back to start downloading
    the image after downloading, ... -patch-FP.iso

 3.2  Mount the patch image to the vCenter virtual machine (VCSA)

  • Check the host where the VCSA resides and the storage used.
  • Access the host and upload the image to the corresponding storage.
  • Edit VCSA and mount the uploaded image.

3.3  Perform patch upgrade installation

3.3.1 Installation through the web console on port 5480

  • The version before upgrade is 6.7.0.40000
  • Access the console https://172.16.241.11:5480, click Check CD-ROM, if the vCenter network can directly communicate with the VMware patch official website, just check the URL
  • After confirming that the version information is correct, click "Dump and Install", and the upgrade task will be completed automatically.

3.3.2 Use the SSH command to perform the upgrade installation

  • The web console method will check the URL by default when it is detected for the first time, and it may be stuck for a long time. At this time, the SSH method is more efficient.
  • SSH access to VCSA (mirror mounted according to chapter 3.2)
  • Run software-packages stage --iso to analyze the ISO file
  • Press Enter, browse the user agreement, enter yes to agree

  • Run software-packages list --staged to view the decomposed packages (optional)
  • After checking that the version is correct, run software-packages install --staged to start installing the patch
  • After completion, run shutdown reboot -r updating to complete the restart
  • Access the VCSA virtual machine console to verify the results
