Compiz 0.9.14.2 Released, Hybrid Window Manager

After more than two years, Compiz has released a small point version update: 0.9.14.2 , which fixes multiple bugs, and optimizes features.

  • Add support for _GTK_WORKAREAS_Dn and _GNOME_WM_STRUT_AREA
  • Fix build errors when using newer versions of GCC
  • Fixed some bugs in blur and opengl plugins on OpenGL ES

Compiz 0.9.14.2 also fixes a bug about the pkg-config search path, fixes the appearance of the Compiz CCSM settings manager in dark themes, supports CMake Unity builds, and uses the correct window when deciding if focus should be present, and also There are several translation updates.

Compiz was the first hybrid window manager powered by OpenGL to run on the X Window System and had a huge impact on the Linux desktop. Compiz's hybrid rendering capabilities make it possible to implement a variety of visual effects in the window management process, such as window minimization on a rectangular virtual desktop.

Compiz is ICCCM compliant and can replace the Metacity window manager in the GNOME environment, or KWin in the KDE Plasma environment. Compiz features many of the desktop effects available in Apple's Mac OS X operating system, such as Exposé. Compiz uses the OpenGL drawing layer Glitz architecture on top of Xgl, the new X environment.

Compiz was first published by Novell in January 2006 when the new version of Xgl was announced. In the early stage of development, Compiz can only run normally on a limited number of hardware 3D accelerator cards supported by Xgl. Most NVIDIA and ATI graphics cards can run Compiz properly on Xgl, although Xgl and Compiz are both buggy and still under active development. Compiz also runs fine on some other X servers and hardware. Compiz reportedly works well on AIGLX, which is still in development.

On July 30, 2007, Compiz was merged with its fork, Beryl, and renamed Compiz Fusion. On February 2, 2009, Compiz and Compiz Fusion merged under the new name Compiz.
