GNU Guix 1.1.0 released, transactional package manager

GNU Guix 1.1 has been released . Guix is ​​a transactional package manager and an advanced distribution of the GNU system that respects user freedom. In addition to standard package management functions, Guix supports transparent upgrades and rollbacks, unprivileged package management, configuration files for each user, and garbage collection.

Almost a year has passed since the last version 1.0.0 , during which 201 developers contributed code and software packages. This development cycle is a long time for the release of new versions, in part because bug fixes and new features are continuously guix pulldelivered to users. However, many improvements, especially the installer, will greatly improve the user's first-time experience.

1.1.0 contains more than 14000 commits, the update highlights are as follows:

  • The new guix deploycommand supports the deployment of multiple computers at once, whether it is a remote computer connected via SSH or a computer on a virtual private server (VPS)
  • New guix time-machinecommands provide access to other versions of Guix
  • guix packImprove support for Docker images
  • Guix can now publish and download alternatives to lzip compression , which greatly reduces bandwidth requirements
  • In terms of operating system, Guix 1.1.0 has improved its graphical installer and supports multiple new services such as GNOME Keyring, NFS, PulseAudio, Auditd, etc.
  • 3514 new packages have been added, with a total of more than  13K packages . 3368 software packages have been upgraded. This version comes with GNU libc 2.29, GCC 9.3, GNOME 3.32, MATE 1.24.0, Xfce 4.14.0, Linux-libre 5.4.28 and LibreOffice 6.4.2.2
  • Add 19 new services, especially for running  NFS servers , configuring  nftables firewalls and even   advanced web services like Patchwork
  • For common low-level operations, performance has been improved

Guix 1.1.0 is also the last version with the Linux-Libre kernel. From this version , support for the Linux kernel will be terminated and replaced by the Hurd microkernel.
