TIOBE July list: Python/C/C++/C# most likely to be the language of the year

TIOBE has released the programming language rankings for July 2022 .

TIOBE CEO Paul Jansen pointed out that the TIOBE index changed little last month. The current top 4 languages Python, C, Java and C++ have a combined market share of nearly 50%. Fortran and Matlab squeezed out Lua and Prolog to enter the top 20 again. Halfway through the year, by far the biggest candidates for TIOBE's 2022 Language of the Year are Python, C, C++ and C#. It does not expect any relatively new and popular languages like Rust, Dart, Kotlin or TypeScript to make the top 20.

Compared with the June list,  SQL and  Assembly language in the TOP 10 list have exchanged their positions again; the positions of other languages remain unchanged. PHP and Go both rose, 13 11 and  15 → 12, respectively .

In addition, the rankings of the TOP 11-20 rose compared with the previous month: Ruby (19→15), Fortran (26→18), Matlab (24→20); the rankings dropped: Classic Visual Basic ( 11→13), Delphi/Object Pascal (12→14), Objective-C (14→16), R (16→19). Perl still maintains the 17th position, and Lua and Prolog, which were squeezed out, dropped from the 18th and 20th positions last month to the 24th and 25th positions today.

The TIOBE Programming Community index, a measure of programming language popularity, is updated monthly. Judging is based on engineers, courses and third-party vendors worldwide, including popular search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, Wikipedia, Amazon, YouTube, and Baidu, which are used for index calculations. It is worth noting that the TIOBE index does not represent how good a programming language is or how much code is written.

The index can be used to check whether your programming skills are still up to date, or to make decisions about which programming language to use when starting to build a new software system.
