Reboot, enter the GRUB menu, select recovery mode (do not enter, press e to enter boot edit mode) 
scroll the screen to the bottom, delete recovery nomodeset 
and type quiet splash rw init=/bin/bash 
press F10 to run, the next will be Use root to log in and 
enter a new password
