Windows 10 Anniversary Edition early adopters

As early as this year's Build conference, Microsoft began to promote the latest Windows 10 Anniversary Edition update, showing off a lot of stunts. It was not officially released until yesterday (2016/8/2 PST). Related news can be found here . The official version is Version 1607, the system compiled version is Build 14393.10.

There are currently several ways to start an update:

1. Windows Update, for all users, but Microsoft will initially push it in batches, and it is estimated that many people will not get it immediately. You can go to the "Update and Security" settings and Roll up, if you are lucky, you will see a screen similar to the one below.

2. Media Creation Tool, a system update tool launched by Microsoft, can automatically select and download images to update. It should be noted that 8-10G of free space must be reserved.

3. MSDN subscription, all subscribers can directly choose any version they need, including public version, enterprise version, education version, IoT version and so on.

4. Download iso from Windows official.

Let's start the early adopters. I chose to subscribe and download from MSDN, and installed the Chinese enterprise version. The important thing is to do it in a virtual machine (after all, I don't have much expectations for the stability of windows).

After downloading the image, create a virtual machine, insert the image and start it, and soon see the installation interface. There is no change, but the loading speed is much faster. On my mechanical hard disk machine, the whole process of installing and copying takes about 10 minutes, which can be said to be well controlled.

Next is the installation and configuration process. There are too many options and obscure explanations in the process. Without a foundation, I really don't know how to operate. However, the highlight is Cortana, you can start Cortana without a live account, a simple open button is enough. After that is the system configuration process. Microsoft's user experience here has been significantly improved. Several special "greetings" are provided in Chinese. It feels that the wait is not so long. The configuration was completed in about 1 minute, and then jumped to the familiar desktop.

The latest thing about the desktop that caught my eye was the change in the bottom right corner. The number of unread messages is added to the notification area (I don’t know how it will be displayed when it accumulates to 99 or 9999?), and then a new date display. You can see the calendar and reminders at a glance when you click it, which is very convenient for the experience.

Click the start button to open the start menu, and you can see that many of the applications preset by Microsoft, some of which have been installed, and some are just an installation link, will be automatically downloaded and installed from the Microsoft Store after clicking.

A large search box has been added to the settings interface. It seems that I am not alone in the icon group~

Open Settings -> Accounts -> Login Options, and see the Windows Hello that Microsoft has been showing off at Build for a long time.

Another important part of Microsoft's publicized function improvement is the extension of Edge, which can be directly jumped to the Microsoft market by clicking on it.

After reading the above intuitive interface, I feel that there is some improvement. In terms of user experience, the operation is more simplified, and common functions can be found in the most prominent places (provided that you have some understanding of the system).

One of the more attractive applications in this update is the built-in translation, which not only provides a large number of language translations, but also translates speech more accurately. It is recommended for early adopters.

Next, let's focus on another important feature provided by the Windows 10 Anniversary Edition - the Windows Subsystem for Linux, which is currently in Beta. It is worth noting that you need to open the developer mode first, otherwise the startup bash will crash.

After restarting, you can start the Linux subsystem through bash.exe, you can see the prompt, this subsystem is Ubuntu distributed by Canonical.

After the download is complete, it will be automatically decompressed, and then you will be prompted to create an account.

Then you can try to run some Linux commands. Here you can see that the system mounts all Windows disks to /mnt. For example, if you want to access the data of the D disk, you can run it (the example shows the hello string in the D disk. text snippet):

$ cat /mnt/d/test/*.txt | grep “hello”

Simply enumerate all the files under /bin and /sbin, and you can see that most of the basic commands built into the system are available except for some low-level operations.
