Gemalto's biometric authentication technology revolutionizes Colombia's automated border controls

Iris recognition technology at Bogota International Airport allows passengers to safely transit in seconds

AMSTERDAM--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Gemalto , the global leader in digital security (Euronext NL0000400653GTO), and Colombian partner INCOMELEC SAS, helping the country’s border agency, Migración Colombia, implement a bio-iris verification system that is transforming Colombia’s customs clearance and Immigration management. Launched in February this year, the innovative solution was piloted at El Dorado International Airport in Bogota. The country's citizens and border officials benefit from the Automated Border Control (ABC) system, locally known as "BIOMIG" . Gemalto's ABC system speeds up the identity verification process, greatly reducing bottlenecks in the immigration process, while maintaining a high level of security control over each passenger.

The largest increase (up to 60%) of passengers arriving at Bogota Airport are Colombian citizens re-entering the country. This often results in long immigration queues, congested waiting areas and increased passenger fatigue. BIOMIG can mitigate these challenges while adhering to Colombia's stringent border control security requirements.

How does it work?
The solution integrates a highly intuitive iris recognition terminal that enables fast long-distance iris acquisition from distances of 35 to 45 cm. It does not require physical contact with the terminal, improving comfort and ease of use. To use the service, Colombian citizens 12 years of age and older simply go to one of the 30 BIOMIG collection stations at the airport for a simple registration upon departure at the airport. In less than a minute, their one-of-a-kind iris scans are securely registered with Colombia's Border Management System (BMS). When re-entering the country, previously registered citizens simply enter their national ID number on a touch screen integrated into the automatic door barriers by INCOMELEC, SAS. After a quick eye alignment with the iris reader terminal, their identity is verified through a secure digital process and the automatic door opens.

Gemalto has supported Migración Colombia's border operations with advanced secure document authentication solutions, biometric solutions and software integrations.

Francesc Ortodo, Sales Director, Government Programs, Latin America, Gemalto, said: “The challenge of a border control solution is to minimize and simplify immigration procedures while increasing the comfort, speed and convenience of the end user – without compromising security. This is exactly what What ABC’s iris solution enables. Colombian citizens can now benefit from robust and secure biometrics in a trusted environment.”
