How can there be so many "ability issues", until you reach a certain level, it's all about "attitude issues"

Introduction: There is a saying in the workplace, "It's a question of ability, but a good work attitude . " Often times, "ability issues" seem to be easier to forgive when they're not doing well enough.

I admit that time, chance, talent, character, background, early education, and other factors that we cannot fully control are very important, and may delineate our personal "ability" within a certain range.

For example, as an ordinary working mother in the imperial capital, I feel that there is a high probability that I will not be able to make a direct contribution to the flight of mankind to Mars, nor will I be able to participate in the Olympic Games. I don't dare to pat my chest and promise that I can make a lot of money or change the world by starting a business now.

However, the power of personal choice is still too much underrated. There is still a vast and uncertain space between the boundaries of our ability at the moment, and the limits that are completely insurmountable.

I want to share the stories of a few friends around me, and talk about why "ability" is determined by "attitude"——

The attitude of the past determines the ability of the present; the attitude of the present determines the ability of the future.

Because "attitude" is how far you want to push the boundaries of your "ability".

01  People with attitude, the radar is on

After leaving McKinsey, I did marketing. There was an internal training to share insights on wealth management users. I asked everyone, "If there is a wealth management product, the bank promises a rate of return of 8%. Would you consider it?"

Most of the people in the audience will answer "considering", because the bank endorsement feels extremely low risk, and the yield is higher than the general products with the same risk level.

Then, I would ask again, "There is also a wealth management company, which was opened by my cousin and his classmate, and promised a 10% rate of return. Would you consider it?" "No."

"What about 12%?" "Don't think about it."

"What about 15%?" "I don't even dare to think about it!"

Because, who is your cousin's classmate, I can't believe it.

This is a simple question and answer, allowing participants to assume the role of users and feel the trade-off between risks and benefits. This makes the training atmosphere a little more interactive. Well, the interaction is not so boring at all.

Not long after, a little guy in our team went to give training. I was busy and didn't participate in the preparation. During the training, I called in to listen.

I suddenly heard him ask, "If there is a wealth management company opened by my cousin and his classmates, with a promise of 10% interest, would you consider investing?"

To be honest, the interaction I designed was nothing special. I admire this young colleague because he sees a method that might work, pays attention, and then tries it out when he gets a chance.

People with strong abilities in the workplace have a common characteristic, that is, they pay special attention to "how others do it, and what methods can help me do better".

Their radar is always on - keep an eye out for cutting-edge trends, reflect on previous experience, and be sensitive to better ways. It's like the school tyrants in their youth who always care about what reference books and question banks other academic tyrants use.

Skills in the workplace are all-encompassing and dynamic. There is no "tools" that you can read once and for all .How to write clear emails, how to hold meetings effectively, how to manage time, how to liven up the atmosphere... Looking around, many people are demonstrating to you in daily life.

This book is open to see if we are willing to read, ponder, and practice. It is in bits and pieces that we slowly arm ourselves to become more efficient.

02 People with attitude, good at self-learning

Every mother of a young child has probably discussed the eating habits of their children, and some children will need adults to chase and feed them all over the world.

When we are adults, there are also adults in the workplace who "wait for feeding" and "eat themselves". The former needs a little push, while the latter buys food, orders food, searches for recipes and learns to cook.

There is a girl in our marketing team who is "Content Operations", commonly known as "Editor". She writes fluently and beautifully typeset, but she never uses Office much. Until one day, a certain project stayed up late to work on a PPT, and asked her to help.

I heard the project manager say to her, "Can these pictures be drawn in PPT", and she replied, "You are busy, hurry up, I am Baidu , I am not sure, I will ask you again".

The final PPT handed in is very professional (of course it is related to her writing and design background), there is only one picture she can't draw with PPT, she made it first with Photoshop, and asked everyone if this is okay.

Capable people have an "I can" attitude towards the unknown world. Thanks to the Internet, the whole world is also an open book, we can know Baidu by ourselves, we can ask people for advice, we can buy books for classes, we can read help files, we can try and learn...

There must be things in this world that challenge the limit of IQ and the height of emotional intelligence, but what hinders us is often the state of "this is boring, this is difficult, I can't do it, I will talk about it later". Whether we can do it ourselves and explore new knowledge largely determines how far we can go, how strong we become, and how well we live.

03  People with attitude, do their best

More than two years ago, when I was in a previous startup company, the CEO proposed to place advertisements in the Lujiazui area. We chose an advertising space in a subway station hall and signed a contract with Speed.

Flying to Shanghai, the supplier accompanied him to the scene to have a look. One of the post-90s members of the team looked ugly on the spot.

I asked him quietly, "Do you think it's okay?"

It was an earlier subway line, and the station hall was old and dim, and the effect was much worse than viewing pictures from a distance. Passengers are in a hurry in the station hall, and the visual impact of the selected area is not enough. At the same time, different shapes of light boxes and columns are placed, which increases the difficulty and production cost of creativity.

However, as a CMO, I am naturally hesitant, considering that the schedule has been set, and I don’t know if it is feasible to modify it at this time.

The post-90s generation said firmly, "It must be changed! I'll tell you! It's negotiable! It's too late!" Fortunately, the supplier was very cooperative and helped us make adjustments.

Later, I wrote this into the recommendation letter of the post-90s generation. He won offers from several famous schools such as Kellogg, Berkeley, and LBS.

To be honest, it was the CEO's idea to buy advertisements in the Lujiazui area, and it was the decision of the bosses of the post-90s generation to sign up for this area. Afterwards, no one could decide that the original location must be bad. He had already said that he would apply for going abroad two years later. I didn't intend to live and die with this company.

In other words, by changing his position, he was just "making trouble" for himself.

It's just that excellent people have the strongest desire to do things well. And because of this, they think independently, reflect on judgment, make suggestions, and actively promote.

In the long career path, there is the kind of energy that "if you have done it, you must do it well", so that you have the opportunity to take on greater responsibilities and win more victories.

04 A person with an attitude, a long stream of water

Last year, I fooled a former colleague from the e-commerce industry to come to our startup to do consumer finance. After working for half a year, this guy feels that he still likes "consumption" and doesn't care about "finance", so he decides to return to the retail industry.

It was me who disrupted the rhythm of his career. I was very embarrassed, so I tried my best to use my contacts to help him find opportunities, and the end result was quite satisfactory. This matter is taken care of.

On the day of reporting to the new job, he sent me a message, "I'm going to work in XX today, and I thank you all my friends for helping to create opportunities. Thank you very much!" At the same time, he sent me a screenshot of the chat record expressing his gratitude to others. .

Over the past month, I have introduced him to more than a dozen friends in the retail circle, most of whom are McKinsey and Wharton alumni. Despite adding WeChat and leaving a phone number, most people would have had a weak relationship with him, and have since forgotten about each other.

And this little gesture of his,

First, it helped me to thank the people we both had trouble with again;

Second, it reinforces the message to my friends that "the person she recommends is very sensible", and it will be easier for me to recommend people in the future;

Third, turn my contacts into his contacts, all in the retail circle, and those who meet will meet again.

Dealing with such a person is really comfortable and worth the money, and I am willing to pay for him next time!

You say, is this difficult? Emotionally intelligent indeed, and I know he doesn't do it all out of skill.

He has always been known as "reliable", and he understands that the character of "reliable" is built up like this.

People are set like this, brands are like this, and things are like this. There are so many truths in the world, it depends on whether you have the will to stick to it.

05 People with attitude, stay mindful

I know a young colleague, and after dealing with it a few times, I feel vaguely strange, but I can't tell where the problem is.

One day, I had a different opinion with another of his leaders; it was not a big deal, so I had a phone call with his leader and reached a consensus.

At that time, he stood beside me and sighed, "Hey, the bosses have different opinions, it's really hard for me to do it."

At that moment, I understood where the problem was. That day, I gave him feedback and said to him, "Try not to take this too seriously".

Like many friends in life, he is responsible and hardworking, but he is prone to revealing negative emotions.

People who have been in contact with some negative energies generally complain about two themes, one is "I'm so unlucky", and the other is "XX is so bad".

I'm in a traffic jam during a meeting, I'm so unlucky, the traffic is so bad.

The toilet is broken, I am so unlucky, the property is so bad.

The boss made a mistake, I'm so unlucky, the boss is so bad.

The customer has a problem, I am so unlucky, the customer is so bad.

Others misunderstand me, I am so unlucky, others are so bad.

……

On the one hand, there are layers of social and economic pressure; on the other hand, there is a technological explosion and rapid iteration. The back waves of the Yangtze River push the front waves, and the front waves die on the beach. And in every era, at every class, there are people who are choosing to try their best to be the best version of themselves.

As Dalio writes in Principles:

There is nothing more important than understanding how reality works and how to deal with it. The state of mind you bring to this process makes all the difference.

There is nothing more important than "understanding how the real world works" and "how to deal with it". And your mentality in the process determines all the differences.

is to remember.
