How to use IPv6 on campus network

1. Introduction to IPv6

Excerpt from Baidu Encyclopedia: IPv6 is a next-generation IP protocol designed by the IETF to replace the current version of the IP protocol (IPv4). It claims to be able to compile a URL for every grain of sand in the world.
I won’t say too much nonsense. Anyway, IPv6 is a new protocol to replace IPv4. If you want to know more about it, it may be better for Baidu and Google.

2. China's current situation

China has access to IPv6 very early, but it has not been popularized until today. It may take a long time to replace the original protocol. Recently, there is a "Snowman Project" that is ready to start deploying IPv6 servers in China, and I look forward to the day when it will be popularized sooner.
Although it is not popular in China, it is understood that some colleges and universities can already use IPv6 to access the Internet. I can't help but sigh that the university is really an ivory tower!

3. How to use

There is a lot of talk in the front, in fact, all you need to prepare is a network cable and a computer. .

3.1 Connect the cable

At present, it seems that WLAN does not support IPv6. Of course, it may be that I have not studied thoroughly, and the wireless one will be put aside first. If you are interested, you can try it again. I used a cable to connect to the school's network here.

3.2 Check whether it is supported

I am here on win10 system.
First, open your own network and sharing center;

then, click on Ethernet;
click ethernet
then, check the IPv6 status, the Internet indicates that the connection is successful. If IPv6 is not enabled, click Properties in the lower left corner , and then check the IPv6 protocol to enable it. Of course, if IPv6 is turned on, and you are sure to connect to the school's network, and if it still doesn't work, it is very likely that IPv6 is not supported, and it is also possible that the school has turned off IPv6 these days. .

Another detection method is Baidu's IPv6 test, which should be able to be used after passing the test.

3.3 Modify hosts

This step may not be necessary , because I could go directly to Google before, but the YouTube may have a little problem, so I still found an IPv6 hosts resource to modify it. For the specific method, please refer to a blog I wrote before ( using hosts to skip DNS resolution ). In order to protect the security of resources, I will not provide them here. I believe that smart people can find them.

3.4 Successful Internet access

Here I successfully surf the Internet without burning traffic. There are also many interesting sites for IPv6. I found a network TV in Tsinghua University where you can watch TV programs casually, and some resources may be shared by some universities. Then go explore for yourself.

4. Some pits I stepped on

  1. Let's connect the cable, of course, the big guy said otherwise;
  2. You may not log in to your online account. Schools generally have Internet accounts, and then charge you for traffic. If you just want to go to IPv6 sites to watch things, you can go directly without logging in;
  3. Coexistence of IPv4 and IPv6. I didn't log in to the school account before and used Google browser to search, and found that Google can search for things, but the problem is that most Chinese websites only resolve IPv4, and I can't use IPv4 without logging in to my account. I was forced to log in to my account and found that I couldn't get on Google, although IPv6 was still in the Internet state. Here comes the issue of browser resolution priority, whether your domain name resolves IPv6 or IPv4 first. Google Chrome has tried to modify the configuration, but it still failed. Later, I temporarily abandoned Google Chrome and chose Firefox . Firefox can perform Google search, and click on Google to search for sites. The specific technology is unknown, but the Firefox browser is indeed better.

After testing in some native computers, I found that ipv6 can still be used in the case of WLAN. Of course, the WLAN access is still a campus network that supports ipv6. But it's baffling that my own computer can't...hope I can fix this soon. .

I found myself a little stupid. It turned out that my WLAN has not checked the ipv6 protocol, so it has not been supported. So far, we have come to the conclusion that there should be no problem in using any network that supports ipv6. The next step may have to wait for me to finish.
