Their properties depend on two fundamental factors: Machines, a realm of life based on metallic compounds, and Essence, a life-enabling energy that gives life to all machines.
With unlimited use of Quintessence, Cryptons quickly became the dominant species. Eventually they spread among the stars and perform miracles.
It was a time of abundance and peace.
#2 Lost Age
Unlimited desire for expansion, interstellar travel and inhabiting new worlds must come with certain costs. The Quintessence deposit is decreasing at an alarming rate throughout the known universe. At the height of their civilization, the Empire faced a crisis of unimaginable consequences.
The low levels of primary energy sources became the cause of conflict between the ruling factions of the Cryptonic Empire. Growing hostility inevitably led to war. Armies from dozens of galaxies clashed in their biggest war ever. The echoes of this conflict resounded in the furthest corners of their dimension. Thousands of solar systems were completely wiped out. An entire generation has been lost.
This devastating conflict has lasted for thousands of years, with no winners or losers, only the survivors.
After years of mindless slaughter, the long-awaited peace has finally been envisioned. All these sacrifices proved to be in vain. The remaining energy sources are partially rebuilt, but the elite level is lower than ever.
This is called a period of grief and loss.
#3 Permanent sleep

A quintessentially dramatic flaw that killed billions of crypto. The corpses of those once almost almighty organisms cover the surface of every inhabited planet.
