Rancher 2.0 milestone release: support for adding custom nodes!

Rancher is an open source full-stack enterprise-level container management platform. Users can click and click on the Rancher visual interface to complete the docking and deployment of all container infrastructure (network, storage, load balancing, etc.) Containers run seamlessly on any infrastructure (public and private clouds, virtual machines, physical machines, etc.), and simple and intuitive operations can handle all the work of using containers in production environments.

Starting with Rancher 2.0, every cluster in Rancher will be based on Kubernetes. Users can take full advantage of the powerful performance of Kubernetes and its rapidly growing ecosystem, and Rancher 2.0 will accelerate the adoption of Kubernetes in the enterprise through the simple and intuitive user experience based on Kubernetes on the Rancher platform.

Rancher Labs released the first technical preview version of Rancher 2.0 on September 27, 2017 at the Rancher China Annual User Conference Container Day, and received great positive responses from a large number of enterprise customers and countless users in the open source community. Over the past quarter, the Rancher Labs R&D team continued to update and optimize the architecture and functions of Rancher 2.0 based on the feedback received, and officially released the Rancher 2.0 Technical Preview II on January 24. Now, Rancher 2.0 has reached a milestone update, and users can add custom nodes when creating RKE clusters!

1. Unified management of K8s clusters from different infrastructures As more and more cloud service providers begin to provide K8s cluster services, it is no longer necessary for users to create clusters by themselves. Rancher 2.0 enables users to centrally manage existing K8s clusters from various infrastructures, whether from cloud service providers (such as Google GKE) or on-premises data centers, which can be imported and managed in a unified manner.

2. Multi-cluster management

Rancher 2.0 provides centralized management of user authentication, monitoring and health checks, giving IT administrators greater visibility and control. Rancher 2.0 takes full advantage of the sophisticated role-based access control (RBAC) capabilities in K8s to provide users with shared cluster and host access.

3. Excellent user experience

Rancher's existing excellent user experience has been significantly improved again, making the Kubernetes experience on the Rancher platform as simple as the Docker command line and as elegant as Docker Compose, which solves the problem of poor ease of use of the Kubernetes native UI. historical issues.

4. Rich application catalog

Rancher's Catalog of Enterprise Application Services has been extended to support Docker Compose, Kubernetes templates and Helm charts, giving users access to more containerized applications.

5. Milestone update: support for adding custom nodes

The previous version of this update only supported DigitalOcean and AWS, and now the latest version, users can add custom nodes when creating RKE clusters. Custom node addition can be achieved through SSH/IP or docker run:

● Via SSH/IP: The user provides the node's IP and SSH key, and Rancher will use the SSH key to create a secure SSH tunnel for the node's docker daemon. After the connection is successful, Rancher will install the corresponding k8s components for the node in the manner indicated by the user-specified role.

● Via docker run: Rancher will generate a docker run command that can be executed on each node, and will install the corresponding k8s components according to the role you choose for the node.

The simple and intuitive interface style and operation experience of Rancher 2.0 solves the long-standing problems of poor ease of use of Kubernetes native UI and steep learning curve in the industry. Rancher 2.0's creative multi-Kubernetes cluster management function also perfectly solves the problem of enterprises in the production environment. Users may face different infrastructure dilemmas, and Rancher 2.0 also brings a series of extended functions. It can be said that Rancher 2.0 provides a more convenient way for enterprises to implement Kubernetes in the production environment and build a new generation of Container as a Service.
