Fedora will make big changes to package manager Microdnf next year

Major changes to the package manager Microdnf are being discussed in the Fedora community.

According to reports, the new package manager Microdnf will provide all the main functions of DNF, and keep the characteristics of low footprint. In the proposal for major changes to Microdnf it said: "The new Microdnf will contain huge improvements and in some cases provide a better experience than DNF. In the future, the new Microdnf will replace DNF. The new Microdnf will come with a new library (libdnf5) and a new DNF Daemon."

Major changes in Microdnf

  • Improve user experience
    • Optimize progress bar
    • Improve transaction table
    • Transaction progress reports including script reports
    • Support local rpm for transactional operations
    • Nice bash autocompletion (better than DNF)
    • Better modular, unified user interface
    • Introduce a new daemon
    • Improve plugin
    • Optimize performance

The developers revealed that in this major change to the package manager Microdnf, some operations or the command line interface will not remain 100% the same as before, and these changes will lead to changes in the internal database and structure. One of the notable changes is that removing a package will no longer trigger the removal of unused dependencies.

As planned, this major change from Microdnf will be available in Fedora 38 a year later, without affecting Fedora 37, which is planned to be launched this fall. See the proposal wiki for more information: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/MajorUpgradeOfMicrodnf .
