As an AI engineer, I need a deep learning host to run a model, a laptop for daily office use, and sometimes to observe the model training on weekends, so remote connection tools are essential.

At the beginning, I used TeamVewer to connect the company's computer, notebook and home computer. Later, there were more and more restrictions, and there were problems such as version mismatch, mobile phone and computer connection card, etc., so I switched to Sunflower.

Sunflower is okay to use, but the free version has a speed limit, and it is very tasteless to transfer files every time. Too many connected terminals will also get stuck, so you can only turn off some of them first. So, it would be great if there was a free product with no speed limit!

Finally found one today, ToDesk! And it is supported on all platforms.

At the end of 2021, since ToDesk launched the official version 4.1, the UI design is brief, the interface is clean and no ads, the device storage has been opened from 2 free to 100 free, the file transfer speed has been increased to 12m/s, and the operation has become more stable. The latest version is currently version 4.2.

Install

windows

Windows installation is relatively simple, you can install it directly. After the installation is complete, you can directly enter the mobile phone number to log in. If you have not registered, you will register yourself.

Ubuntu

Select Linux, click "Download Now" to enter the download page.

The first step is to use wget to get the deb file.

Order:

Then execute the installation command:

Function

The overall usage is similar to that of sunflowers. With unattended model, support for file transfer, support for remote printing and other functions.

After logging in, you can see your own devices. I have three devices. The first one is the Windows system, which is this machine. The second is the Linux system. The third is Android, which is the mobile terminal.

Set a secure password

The security password is different from the temporary code. The security password is set by the user. You need to enter the security password when connecting, otherwise you cannot connect.

Setting method: Advanced Settings->Security Settings->Security Authentication->Use Security Password Only

unattended mode

Support unattended mode, be careful not to let the system sleep while in unattended mode.

Setting method

1. Register and log in to your ToDesk account

2. Set a security password (Advanced Settings -> Security Settings -> Security Authentication -> Only Use Security Password)

3. Set boot auto-start (advanced settings -> basic settings -> boot-up -> boot automatically)

Please disable the system auto hibernation , because the system will be disconnected from the network when the system times out and enters the hibernation state.

In the security settings, set the security verification method to security password, and you can connect directly next time you connect. For example, I have set a secure password for the ToDesk in my Linux, just click "Remote Control" to log in.

On the andriod side, select the device in the device list, and then click on the remote control to enter the password.

file transfer

File transfer is the main application scenario of telecommuting. ToDesk supports drag and drop transfer, copy and paste, and file manager transfer. The transfer speed can reach a high speed of 12m/s.

Select the file to be transferred, drag it to the remote computer screen, or drag and drop the file from the remote computer to the local computer.

remote printing

The remote printing function only supports working on Windows7, 8.1, 10, 11. Using the remote printing function, you can print documents, images from remote devices to a local printer.

Need to install remote print driver, method: 高级设置-> 基本设置-> 远程打印->安装远程打印机驱动

Note: Installing the driver requires administrator privileges

Instructions

1. On the remote computer, when printing documents or pictures, you are asked to select a printer, please select ToDesk Printer

2. The local computer (master) will prompt you to select a printer to print the file (as shown in the figure), please select an available printer

Remote boot

The remote power-on operation is not complicated, as long as the network card supports wake-on-LAN, and related functions are set in the BIOS, and there is a device running ToDesk in the same local area network, it can support wake-up.

Note:

1. First make sure that the computer's network card supports Wake-on-LAN (current computers generally support it), and enable the corresponding function in the BIOS

Different motherboard manufacturers have different ways to set Wake On LAN, please refer to the manufacturer's instructions
