How to choose the network access method of LoRaWAN terminal

In the previous article, I introduced to you " How to choose between OTAA and ABP for LoRa terminal access in a weak network area " and " The difference between the working principles of OTAA and ABP for the two access methods of LoRa terminal ", and now I will introduce how to choose The method of LoRaWAN terminal access . This article comes from the WeChat public account "Xiao Qi said LoRa". The content has been authorized by Teacher Xiao Qi. Teacher Xiao Qi is a Tencent Cloud online course instructor. Before the beginning of the text , let me introduce how to buy LoRaWAN terminals . When we buy terminals , we need to consult with the manufacturer in advance about the terminal’s network access type. Many manufacturers’ terminal products only provide a separate network access method, either OTAA or ABP. . If you want to support both network access methods, you can purchase a terminal development module; the functions supported by the development module are relatively richer. The development module can not only modify the network access method, but also modify different working methods. If ClassA, B, C, etc., ClassA, B, C, we will introduce to you in future courses.

Let’s start with the introduction of the main text of this issue. When we search for LoRaWAN knowledge on the Internet, we sometimes find inaccurate remarks; for example, some materials mention that OTAA is more suitable for management of a large number of devices than ABP . From the introduction of the previous article In, we have learned that no matter whether it is OTAA or ABP device, some initial parameter configuration is required, and after the device is successfully connected to the network, the working mode of OTAA device and ABP device is the same, there is no difference . Therefore, regardless of the level of deployment or later management and maintenance, there is no model for OTAA equipment and ABP equipment, which is more suitable for managing a large number of equipment.

There are also some comments that OTAA is suitable for commercial LoRaWAN networks, while ABP is suitable for private LoRaWAN networks. The reason for such comments may be because only security is considered. Because the three encryption parameters of OTAA can be changed at any time by re-entering the network, OTAA is more secure than ABP terminals. However, a commercial network should not only consider security one-sidedly, but also need to consider other issues such as cost and coverage. For example, in the weak network area mentioned earlier , the OTAA terminal may not work in the weak network area. In order to ensure the coverage of the weak network area, we can add some new gateways, but adding gateways means that the cost will increase. We can also improve the working ability of the terminals in the weak network area by changing the terminal's network access method. This saves costs and improves network coverage. In the case of comprehensive consideration, it is not that OTAA is more suitable for commercial LoRaWAN networks than ABP

Finally, a simple summary of the different access methods. If you want to simplify the access process or increase the coverage , it is recommended that you use the ABP access method. However, in a LoRaWAN network, it is not only possible to use the OTAA access method, or only Can use ABP to access the network. Terminals with two different ways of accessing the network can be used together without conflict.

In the next article, I will continue to share more LoRaWAN related knowledge, and I hope you will continue to pay attention to us.
