With the increase of effective computing power and the participation of more and more miners, higher and higher gas fees have also become a major problem for miners.
Last week, the Filecoin network triggered the fourth upgrade since the launch of the autonomous network, implementing FIP-0009. Eliminate the burden of the basic cost of successful WindowPoSt messages, so that storage miners can afford to prove the cost of existing storage without being affected by network congestion.
What is the FIP-009 proposal
Filecoin uses the EIP-1519 version, which introduces a basic fee based on block fees to control message congestion. Since the launch of the mainnet in October 2020, the most common complaint by miners (especially small miners) has been that during the period of the surge in basic fees, proof of storage has become too high. Since miners only have a 30-minute time window to land on their Proof of Time (PoSt), they have no choice of waiting for message congestion reduction and basic cost reduction, and have to pay high gas fees for SubmitWindowedPoSt messages.
FIP-0009 changed this behavior, exempting the basic fee for the successful execution of SubmitWindowedPoSt, that is, no longer burning baseFee gasUsed (the actual usage of the basic unit price ), and returning the gas fee that was originally planned to be consumed in the successfully executed WindowPoSt to the miner. The result of this is that when message congestion is high, the cost of enabling new storage will increase, but the cost of proving existing storage will remain basically the same.
To put it simply, if a miner submits a WindowePoSt message and the message is successfully executed, the system will refund the Gas fee consumed by the miner's SubmitWindowedPoSt step, thereby reducing the Gas fee of Filecoin. V czdn222
Looking at Filecoin's Gas Fees in the Long Term
The gas fee itself is used to regulate, and currently Filecoin's gas fee does not play this role at all. The FIP-009 proposal exempts the baseFee of SubmitWindowedPoSt, and the FIP-008 proposal PreCommitSector is merged and submitted.
From these updates, we can see that Filecoin officials are paying close attention to the development of the entire Filecoin network, and follow up and correct problems in real time. There is no one-size-fits-all model for any reform, and it must be done step by step.
The official also said that they have various ideas to further improve the situation next year, including the idea of completely moving WindowPoSt verification out of the chain!
In the long run, Filecoin's gas fee problem will definitely be solved, but simply reducing the gas fee is definitely not the best solution.
