Share the process of restoring macOS 11.1 with a USB flash drive for M1 series computers. This time the online restoration of M1 is too troublesome. It is better to make a bootable USB flash drive for M1.

1. Prepare a 16G or more U disk or mobile hard disk.

2. Download the installation file of macOS 11.1

Make U Disk Boot Disk

First of all, find a U disk or mobile hard disk with more than 16G. In the Mac disk management tool, format the U disk to Apple’s format and name it: MyVolume,

  • Name: MyVolume
  • Format: Mac OS Extension (Journaled)
  • Scheme: GUID Partition Map

Then download the macOS 11.1 installation file directly to the Mac application folder, and the downloaded installation file does not need to be opened.

Finally, open the terminal and enter: sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Big\ Sur.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume

Prompt to enter the computer password, click y, wait for the percentage to finish, the boot U disk of macOS Big Sur is ready.

U Disk Reinstallation System

After making the U disk, start to install the system, first shut down, restart and hold down the power button until you enter the recovery interface and let go.

Enter the administrator password to enter the menu

After entering the menu, find the utility at the top and select the terminal

After selecting the terminal, after entering resetpassword in the terminal, when the reset password interface appears, do not reset the password, but click the recovery assistant in the upper left corner to erase the Mac. After erasing the Mac, the contents of the hard disk will be all cleared.

After the Mac is erased, the computer will restart, press and hold the power button to re-enter the option interface, then click on the U disk to start, connect to Wi-Fi, enter Apple ID, and activate the Mac.

After activating the Mac, exit to the recovery utility and start to install macOS Big Sur. After a while, the macOS Big Sur installation is complete.

There are a few things to note: first confirm that the Apple ID in the Mac is your own, and then after entering the recovery mode, you don’t need to do the operation of erasing the disk, but to finish erasing the Mac in the recovery assistant, and then enter Activate the Mac in recovery mode and then complete the installation. In addition, the U disk must be 16G, preferably 3.0, which can be faster.
