WordPress 5.4“ Adderley”

According to the schedule, WordPress 5.4 "Adderley" will be released on March 31, 2020. This major update is named after American jazz musician Nat Adderley.

If you have updated the latest developments in WordPress, you may be aware of the major changes in WordPress 5.4 . The new WordPress 5.4 "Adderley" has some features and updates. This time, WordPress did bring some major improvements: a greatly improved block editor, two new blocks, exciting improvements and bug fixes.

Now, let's take a closer look at the new features in WordPress 5.4 "Adderley".

Enhanced block editor

The default block editor in WordPress 5.4 includes the features you saw when the Gutenberg plugin was updated from v6.6 to v7.5. This means fewer errors and a more influential block editor.

WordPress 5.4 will enable full screen mode for the WordPress editor by default. Full-screen editing helps writing without distracting, so you can create content better.

The direct drag and drop function has been added to the "Featured Images" section. You just need to drag and drop an image to the "Featured Image" section to set it as a featured image for your post or page.

WordPress 5.4 adds color options for Cover, Group, and Column blocks. You can select the background and text colors for all blocks in the group block. In addition, you can select the background and text colors for the column blocks.

Not only these, but there are many other block editor enhancements that will enhance your overall WordPress experience.

New block

This major version includes two new blocks: "Social Icons" and "Buttons".

Social icon block: With complex social icons, you can easily add and display social media profiles on WordPress posts and pages. There are three styles to choose from, and 39 different social networks.

Button block: Allows you to add multiple buttons at once. There are two different styles, namely custom text, background color and gradient background color options.

New welcome guide pop-up window

WordPress 5.4 introduces a new welcome guide pop-up window to help you use the block editor. This guide will explain what a block is, point users to the block library, and include a link to the block editor tutorial. This is a very exciting feature because many of us are still unsure of the block editor and have difficulty using it. For everyone who wants to start using the Gutenberg editor, this new guide concept will undoubtedly provide them a huge help.

Good things for developers

  • Two new actions allow you to add custom fields to menu items-no plug-ins and no need to write custom walkers.
  • Favicon processing enhancement
  • On the menu management screen, wp_nav_menu_item_custom_fields is triggered before the move button of the navigation menu item in the menu editor.
  • In the customizer, wp_nav_menu_item_custom_fields_customize_template is triggered at the end of the menu item form field template.
  • Completely simple block style. Both the negative margin and default padding are exceeded! Now you can use style blocks as needed. Also, the refactoring eliminated four redundant wrapper divs.
  • If you build a plugin, you can now register a collection of modules across categories by namespace, which is a great way to gain more brand awareness.
  • Let users use two new APIs to do more things: block changes and gradients.
  • In embedding, the block editor now supports TikTok-CollegeHumor withdrawn.
