Chrome will extend support for Windows 7 until 2022

Windows 7  officially ceased support on January 14, 2020, and Microsoft officials have been encouraging users to upgrade to Windows 10. However, Google recently announced that it has decided to actually extend support for Windows 7.

It pointed out in the announcement that after evaluating the current situation and based on feedback from corporate customers, Chrome will extend support for Windows 7 until January 15, 2022.

This is six months longer than the July 2021 deadline announced by the company. In this regard, the reason given by Google is also very simple, that is, due to the global pandemic, the migration to Windows 10 is slow, and many IT administrators are forced to work remotely. Mobile installation of a new operating system to receive updates is a considerable challenge. , Many organizations have not yet transitioned from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

Google said it hopes to provide support for all these users and provide more updates for Google Chrome on Windows 7, because they just need more time to complete the switch to the new version of the operating system.

Chrome Engineering Director Max Christoff said that the migration to Windows 10 is part of the roadmap for many organizations this year. But with the emergence of new priorities for the IT team, 21% of organizations are still in the process of migrating to Windows 10.1, and at least 1% of companies have not even begun the migration process.

He said that with the extension of support, companies that are still upgrading can rest assured that their users on Windows 7 will continue to benefit from the security and productivity advantages of Chrome. "The IT team can also take advantage of Chrome’s existing enterprise features and future roadmap, including our continued investment in cloud management, enterprise security features, and our closer integration with the broader ecosystem in each operating system version. plan."

Regarding this move by Google, some foreign media commented that Google has initiated a bad security behavior, which is very stupid and irresponsible. This expansion of Chrome support will only give these Windows 7 users another reason to further postpone their migration plan.
