Over the years, Google developers have removed from the Chrome browser, FTP support intentions, but Google has also been gradually reducing its support. Google devs made it clear that they want to get rid of the FTP protocol, reluctant to support the FTP protocol.
In a recent article posted to the Chromiumblink-dev mailing list, Google finally announced to give up and delete support for FTP URL in Chrome, because it lacks support for the use and transfer files through encryption.
Google said:
Google Chrome in the current implementation does not support an encrypted connection FTP (FTPS), does not support the proxy. FTP usage in the browser becomes low, and subject to various FTP clients on the effects of platform end, investment support FTP is no longer meaningful.
This paper also said that now is the time to finally remove the FTP protocol from the remaining contents of the browser.
The remaining functions of Google Chrome FTP implementation is limited to displaying directory listing or connecting Resources unencrypted. We want to give up and delete the rest of the function, instead of maintaining an insecure FTP implementation.
Google decided to remove the two remaining FTP function from Chrome, which displays a list of FTP directories and download resources directly from FTP.
Google developer Justin Tervay already struggling to achieve the necessary changes, to disable in Chrome FTP. It has a timeline, Google plans to Chrome 80 stable version no longer supports FTP, to the Chrome 82 will remove the FTP Code and related resources. And so far, in the Chrome 76, Chromium Team has been completely canceled by the support HTTPS proxy to access the FTP URL.
When Chrome 82 or later encounter FTP resources, Chrome redirects the request to the default FTP processing program on your system.
