One week ago, Ubuntu 20.10 was officially released. Now, the name of the new version 21.04 has been determined and development is underway. The new version is called "Hirsute Hippo".

The tentative release date of Hirsute Hippo is April 22, 2021. The Ubuntu version names are arranged in alphabetical order. Ubuntu 20.10 is codenamed "Groovy Gorilla", and "H" immediately follows the "G". This is the third version of the Ubuntu version that uses the code name "H". The first is the 2005 Ubuntu 5.04 "Hoary Hedgehog". The second is the 2008 Ubuntu 8.04 LTS "Hardy Heron".

Ubuntu developer Matthias Klose said on the Ubuntu mailing list on the 28th that Hirsute Hippo is now open for development , uploads collected in the queue have now been approved, and unstable synchronization has also been enabled.

This development version started with a change: Python 3.9 has now been added as a supported Python3 version, and the goal is to release Python 3.9 as the only Python3 version in hirsute.

Ubuntu 21.04 may include GNOME 40, Linux 5.9 (or newer) kernel, and updated versions of core software. The next development milestone is the daily build version of Ubuntu 21.04, which is usually available for download about a week after the development is open.
